The opening episode of House's second season finds misanthropic medico Greg House (Hugh Laurie) still mulling over the possibility of rekindling his romance with lawyer Stacy Warner (Sela Ward)--and never mind that Stacy is very much a married woman. The major medical crisis of the evening concerns death-row inmate Clarence (LL Cool J), who collapses shortly after claiming to hear the voices of all his victims. Despite the stiff opposition of Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein) and Foreman (Omar Epps), House and Stacy conspire conspire to sneak Clarence into the clinic so that House can save his life in time for the execution! Whittier (Anne Judson-Yager) arrives at the fictional California State College hoping to join the national champion varsity cheerleading team. She meets up with her friend from cheerleading camp, Monica (Faune Chambers), and they're both impressive at the tryouts. Head cheerleader Tina (Bree Turner) is ready to ask them to join the team, but Dean Sebastian (Kevin Cooney) goes a step further, telling Tina that Whittier will be the next head cheerleader. This angers Tina's pal Marni (Joie Lenz), who had the position staked out, but Tina goes along with the plan, taking Whittier under her wing. Whittier meets Derek (Richard Lee Jackson), a campus deejay who immediately takes a shine to her. But Tina is very demanding and controlling. She warns Whittier that Derek is not the type of boy she should be dating. Monica is bothered by Tina's meddling, but Whittier momentarily lets her cheerleading ambition get the better of her, and breaks it off with Derek. Then Tina, upset with Monica's sassy attitude, forces Whittier to choose between her friendship and the squad. Whittier and Monica get fed up and quit the team, but Whittier's school spirit cannot be suppressed. With Monica's help, she gathers up the outcasts from the drama club, the dance club, and other groups that have lost their funding and forms a ragtag squad of her own, determined to battle the varsity squad for a spot at the national championship. Following up his critically acclaimed third film, 2001's The Sleepy Time Gal, filmmaker Christopher Munch helmed this dramedy about a pair of brothers who embark on a camping trip together. Harry (Bryce Johnson) is the eldest of the two, a 23-year-old former teen idol who has stopped off for the long-promised expedition while en route to a gig in Japan. Max (Cole Williams) is Harry's 16-year-old younger brother, a burgeoning pop star himself. As the siblings begin spending time together in seclusion, their cordialness erodes and strong feelings begin to come out, exposing old emotions that were never dealt with. Season one of Popular ended with what seemed to be a dual triumph for snooty high-school cheerleader Brooke (Leslie Bibb) and her intellectual classroom rival Samantha (Carly Pope), as the wedding between Brooke's dad, Mike (Scott Bryce), was canceled after the announcement from Brooke's real mom, Kelly (Peggy Lipton), that her divorce from Mike was never finalized! Season two picks up the action, with Kelly scheming and conniving to win back Mike's love, and the heartbroken Jane briefly moving out of town with Sam in tow. Elsewhere, the walls of the two leading cliques at Jacqueline Kennedy High School -- Brooke's and Sam's -- are slowly crumbling to dust. Brooke's bitchy friend Nicole (Tammy Lynn Michaels) is aghast when she loses her coveted slot in the "Glamazon" cheerleading squad to Sam's chubby chum Carmen (Sara Rue). Brooke's football-jock boyfriend, Josh (Bryce Johnson), likewise finds his supremacy challenged by newly arrived gridiron star George Austin (A.T. Montgomery), who, to make matters worse, has crossed over to the enemy camp by dating Sam. And in a similar move, Sam's nerdy buddy Harrison (Christopher Gorham) commits a form of treason by going out with Brooke's shrill Southern-belle pal Mary Cherry (Leslie Grossman); can it be that Harrison's later bout with leukemia is punishment for selling out his anti-clique values? (Even worse: once his disease is in remission, Harrison takes up with Brooke herself!) As the season (and the series) draws to close, Sam's mom, Jane, gives birth to a baby conceived during her relationship with Brooke's dad, Mike, and for a few fleeting minutes the two girls become inseparable friends. But this truce is forgotten by season's end, which concludes with a nail-biting cliffhanger...one that, alas, will likely never be resolved. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
