Overwhelmed by the soul crushing mediocrity of his life and hopelessly embittered by his overbearing boss and cruel ex-wife, a suicidal man recruits a struggling filmmaker to document his last day on earth. Max Walker (Tom Sizemore) is a man consumed by the emptiness inside. He's tired of this world, and at the end of the day he plans on putting a gun to his head and pulling the trigger. But quite a bit can happen over the course of twenty-four hours, and before that fateful bullet is fired there is much to be done. Finally freed from the rules of society and determined to live by his own rules, Max proves himself a man of deep emotional complexity as he commits random acts of heroism and shocking acts of insanity. The last order of business for Max is to confront his uncaring boss and his callous ex-wife, but just as his rage reaches a boiling point he finds his mission suddenly turned upside down due to the kindness of a young woman in a wheelchair. A reunion between two siblings opens wounds both old and new in this drama from Canada. Olivia Walker (Kathryn MacLellan) is a newly divorced woman in her early 40's living in Nova Scotia with her fifteen-year-old son Thomas (Aaron Webber) and younger daughter Sarah Lantz). As Olivia is putting her life back together again, she's surprised by an unexpected visit from her bother Jack (Kris Holden-Ried), a veteran photojournalist with a reputation for his exposes on industrial polluters and crimes against the environment. Jack moves in with Olivia and quickly bonds with Thomas, who is fascinated by his uncle's rabble-rousing stories of taking on enemies of the planet. Jack also strikes up a friendship with Lia (Lisa Ray), a schoolteacher who is Olivia's best friend, and before long they've become lovers. But things become tense between Olivia and Jack when she learns the target of his next investigation is going to be a paint company run by her ex-husband -- and that Jack has enlisted Thomas to help him. Matters become worse when Olivia learns that Jack has not told her the truth about some of his recent exploits -- and that he's wanted by the law in the United States. A handful of oddballs and misfits cross paths at a motel overlooking one of Canada's more recognizable landmarks in this independent comedy. Phillie (Craig Ferguson) is the alcoholic and deeply depressed manager of the Niagara Motel, a shabby inn a stone's throw from the Canadian side of the Niagara Falls. Phillie's guests at the moment include Michael (Kevin Pollak), a sleazy director and producer of porn videos who is attempting to persuade Loretta (Caroline Dhavernas), a pretty young waitress at a nearby diner, to star in his latest series of adult movies; Denise (Anna Friel) and R.J. (Kristen Holden- Reid), a drug-addled couple struggling to regain custody of their child; Henry (Peter Keleghan) and Lily (Wendy Crewson), whose marriage is already starting to crumble before temptation presents itself to Lily; and Boris (Damir Andrei), the Niagara's short-tempered owner. Over the course of their stays, the folks staying at the Niagara will witness an unplanned kidnapping, meet the motel's in-house prostitute, encounter a down-on-his-luck staple salesman, and get uncalled-for advice from a born-again social worker. Canadian writer/director Ian Iqbal Rashid makes his feature film debut with the romantic comedy Touch of Pink. Jimi Mistry plays Alim, an young gay Ismali-Canadian living in a fashionable section of London. He has an active fantasy life involving Kyle MacLachlan, who appears as the charming ghost of Cary Grant. Alim also has an active social life in the real world with his actual boyfriend Giles (Kristen Holden-Ried). His life of leisure is interrupted when his mother Nuru (Suleka Mathew) arrives in town unexpectedly from Toronto. She also has a secret plan to take him back with her to Canada so he can settle down and find a nice Muslim girl to marry. Originally telecast over Canada's CTV network on January 29, 2002, A Killing Spring was a one-shot attempt to revive the popular Joanne Kilbourn Mysteries series (aka Criminal Instincts), starring Wendy Crewson as the ex-police-detective-turned-university-lecturer created by Gail Bowen. Missing from this feature-length whodunit is Joanne Kilbourn's longtime co-star Victor Garber, though Shane Doyle fills in admirably as the "official" representative of the law. In this one, Joanne Kilbourn returns to Lanholm College, where she had once been a professor, when the Dean of Journalism is found dead, evidently the result of autoerotic suffocation during "rough sex." Although she risks losing an important internship, Joanne insists upon investigating the death, and in the process unearths a hotbed of moral depravity and academic backstabbing. Throughout, there is one person who is willing to commit murder rather than allow Joanne to expose his innumerable peccadillos -- and the result, inevitably, is two additional corpses. Gemini awards went to star Wendy Crewson, director Jerry Ciccoretti, writer Karen Walton and film editor George Roulston for their contributions to the fact-based Canadian TV movie The Many Trials of One Jane Doe. Crewson plays the title character, the fifth victim of the High Park Rapist, who has been systematically preying on women in Scarborough, Toronto, and Niagara Falls. After her ordeal, "Jane Doe" discovers that the police knew full well that the rapist was operating in the vicinity, but did nothing to prevent her attack; in fact, the authorities were all but using women like "Jane" as bait to flush out the perpetrator! Hiring Sean Dewart (Steven Mackintosh) as her attorney, "Jane" files suit against the police, only to be caricatured by a hostile press as a hysterical "man-hater" and irresponsible zealot--and thanks to the ruthlessness of the defense team, she is treated in court as though she were the criminal instead of the victim!
