A nomadic country musician returns to his estranged family in Tennessee after 40 years on the road, and finds that the damage he did by leaving is nothing compared to the chaos he's stirred up by returning. Four decades ago, E.F. Bloodworth (Kris Kristofferson) walked away from his wife and three sons, and never looked back. Today, his ex-wife, Julia (Frances Conroy), has suffered a mental collapse, and his three sons, Brady (W. Earl Brown), Boyd (Dwight Yoakam), and Warren (Val Kilmer), have been consumed by rage. In the midst of this familial storm, E.F. forges an unlikely bond with his good-hearted grandson Fleming (Reece Daniel Thompson), who refuses to be defined by his grandfather's mistake, and resists the festering anger that has destroyed his family. But when Fleming falls in love with Raven (Hilary Duff), the mere presence of the boy's reviled grandfather threatens to cast a dark shadow of dysfunction over a whole new generation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Nashville, Tennessee is world famous as the American capitol of country music, and accordingly it's a major hub in the music industry, with every major label and a host of smaller ones maintaining offices there and keeping the town's recording studios and music venues busy. But there's more to the Nashville music scene than what one hears on mainstream country radio, and filmmakers Jean-Martin Vogel and Eric LaRocca Mainade offer an insider's look at the city's pop, rock and alternative country music community in their documentary A Nashville State of Mind. Along with featuring the music of artists such as Jeremy Lister, Courtney Jaye, Aaron Winters and Katie Herzig, the film includes interviews with aspiring artists (many "transplants," as locals call folks who moved from out of town to the city to launch a career) who talk about a place where the music is just as important as the business, and a sense of community binds them rather than fierce competition. Also interviewed are Hank Williams III, Doc McGhee, Mike Grimes and other music business veterans who share their views on both the art and the industry of Nashville's "other" music scene. A Nashville State of Mind was fittingly a featured entry at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

The lost subculture of America's rebellious, Reagan-era hardcore set is explored in filmmaker Paul Rachman's cinematic adaptation of Steven Blush's book. Disillusioned by politics, angered by greedy record labels, and bound together by a powerful antiestablishment sentiment, bands such as Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Bad Brains paved the way for such later bands as Nirvana and Pearl Jam by fearlessly questioning -- and frequently mocking -- the status quo, and proving that you don't need radio play to reach an audience. Whether working for a real change or simply attempting to shake things up in the music scene, these bands gave a voice to the legions of youthful fans who felt their opinions had been neglected in mainstream society. In this documentary, concert footage combines with interviews to offer a comprehensive look at the musical revolution that defined an era. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Music video director Steven Hanft makes his feature debut with the digital video project Southlander, an absurd independent film starring various beloved indie pop musicians. Rory Cochrane stars as Chance, a musician who loses his extremely rare magical synthesizer which takes the form of a white 1969 Moletron keyboard. He looks for it by wandering around a de-glamorised Southern California with pal Rossangeles (co-writer Ross Harris from DJ Me DJ You and Sukia). They sometimes find clues in the local classified newspaper called the Southlander, which leads them to meet interesting folks.Their adventures eventually lead them to the home of former funk legend-turned-tennis player Mother Child (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs from Welcome Back Kotter) and his blonde girlfriend Snowbunny (Meghan Gallagher). Beth Orton stars as Chance's love interest Rocket and the leader of the band Future Pigeon. Beck plays Bek, his younger pre-stardom self, back when he was into drugs and recording music by himself in a shack. Also starring Ione Skye, Hank Williams III, Richard Edson, and Elliot Smith. Southlander was shown at the 2001 South by Southwest Film Festival. ~ Andrea LeVasseur, Rovi
