Mr. Edwards (Victor French) is disappointed that his eldest adopted son, John Jr. (Radames Pera), would rather read books than go hunting. When Edwards gives John a gun as a birthday gift, the boy writes a letter explaining his reluctance to kill any living creature. Despite the letter, Edwards is convinced that John does not love him. The purpose of this ABC Afterschool Special is to educate youngsters in the joys of "empowerment" -- and also to prepare them for the disappointments and setbacks that life may have to offer. The central character is 12-year-old Rufus (Tierre R. Turner), who takes it upon himself to manufacture and market his own brand of toothpaste. Clearly, Rufus has what it takes to be an entrepreneur: not only is he offering his toothpaste for a thrifty three cents per jar, he has also made his product unique by eschewing the usual peppermint flavoring -- and substituting chocolate instead! ~ Rovi

Virtually everyone on Walton's Mountain is profoundly affected when a meteorite falls through the Baldwin sisters' roof. Grandpa (Will Geer) in particular regards the falling star as a grim omen, perhaps of his own imminent demise. Meanwhile, the Baldwins' disreputable cousin Polonius (Iggie Wolfington) tries to capitalize on the astronomical phenomenon by insisting that the meteorite has been sent as warning to the ladies to stop brewing their special moonshine...and to hand their famous "recipe" over to him. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
