Soon after his wife leaves him as a result of an impulsive extramarital fling, the life of a young psychotherapist comes crashing down around him in a series of bizarre incidents in this illusionary drama from Canadian director Sean Garrity. Ever since his wife disappeared from his life, Joel Rothman (Jonas Chernick) has had trouble sleeping. As the insomniac psychotherapist spends his nights drawing sheep on the wall and endlessly looping his wife's angry voice message, his relationship with his young daughter grows increasingly distant and his work begins to suffer. From the aggressive Victor (Callum Keith Rennie) to the deeply depressed Chandra (Michelle Nolden) and the nightmare-plagued, prescription drug-addicted Sophie (Lindy Booth), all of Joel's patients seems to be getting gradually worse on his watch. Now faced with the very real prospect of losing his job, Joel attempts to hold on to his slipping sanity long enough to make sense of his rapidly deteriorating mental state. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Thus begins a series of intense head games between the captors and the terrified woman, who -- sensing that these kids may be in over their heads -- believes she just might be able to outsmart them. The casting of Cybill Shepherd as billionaire home-economics doyenne Martha Stewart in this made-for-TV biopic allegedly grew from a quip made by Today Show host Matt Lauer, that only three people were qualified to portray Martha: Shepherd, Candice Bergen, and Robin Williams (!). The film follows the traditional rags-to-riches route, as Martha rises from a poverty-stricken childhood in Nutley, NJ, to the head of a vast financial empire, largely founded upon her talent for whipping up inexpensive gourmet meals and her sagacious, tasteful home-decorating tips. (It is explained that this metamorphosis is borne of necessity, after Martha's lawyer husband, Andy [Tim Matheson], suffers a lengthy spell of unemployment.) Much is made of the contrast between the sweet, benign "public" Stewart and the hell-on-wheels "private" Stewart, and of course a great deal of footage is devoted to the Wall Street insider-trading scandal that brought about her spectacular downfall. Highlights include a vivid recreation of the confrontation between Stewart and TV host Jane Clayson on the set of CBS' Morning Show. Based on a best-selling book by Christopher Byron, Martha, Inc.: The Story of Martha Stewart first aired May 19, 2003, on NBC. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

This French/German co-production stars Judd Nelson as eccentric scientist Alex Branson, who, after his life is saved by a courageous golden retriever named Rex, returns the favor by operating upon the seriously injured canine. Implanting a high-tech "thetachip" in Rex, Alex transforms the pooch into a super-powered cybermutt, with ultra-developed artificial intelligence and physical powers far beyond those of ordinary hounds. Naturally, Rex's awesome new powers attract the attention of several scurrilous villains, who, aided by Alex's treacherous assistant Erica (Paulina Mielech), try to steal the dog for their own sinister motives. Directed by Australian George Miller of The Man From Snowy River fame, Cybermutt was completed in 2002, but not exhibited in the U.S. until it aired over cable's Animal Planet network on May 26, 2003. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

"Welcome to Life on the Outside" was the advertising tag for the weekly, hour-long Showtime cable network dramatic series Street Time. Rob Morrow starred as former marijuana smuggler Kevin Hunter, recently paroled from prison after five years. Moving into the same neighborhood as his parole officer James Liberti (Scott Cohen), Hunter did his best to go straight, and to mend fences with his common-law wife Rachel Goldstein (Michelle Nordin), the mother of Kevin's nine-year-old son. The no-nonsense Liberti was determined to keep Hunter from lapsing back into his old crooked habits, a task made difficult by Liberti's own chronic gambling and his prickly relationship with wife Karen (Kate Greenhouse). Meanwhile, Hunter's former partners in crime -- who happened to be his brother Peter (Christopher Bolton) and brother-in-law Steve (Simon Reynolds) -- put the pressure on the protagonist to return to the "family business." Street Time debuted on June 23, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
