Where else but Minnesota, a state that has brought us creative minds as diverse as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Garrison Keillor and Paul Westerberg, could a man like Jesse "The Body" Ventura be elected governor? The Jesse Ventura Story follows the inarguably remarkable career of its title character (played by Nils Allen Stewart) as he overcomes an unhappy childhood and strained relationship with his father to find success as a Navy SEAL, a bouncer, a bodyguard, a disc jockey, a professional wrestler and a second-string action movie star, concluding with his most remarkable feat to date: winning Minnesota's 1998 gubernatorial race as a third-party candidate. Produced for NBC television, The Jesse Ventura Story was a model of production efficiency; it was first aired in May 1999, a mere six months after the real life Ventura won the Minnesota election, with Toronto standing in for the Twin Cities. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Unlike his sleazy, anti-erotic Dark Bros. porn films, director A. Gregory Hippolyte's mainstream efforts tend to be sleek, stylish, and erotic like this popular item, a kinky thriller based on a true story. Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2) plays a voyeuristic cop, and Shannon Whirry is his neglected wife. They start bringing home tricks from a classified ad, and Whirry plays with them while Caulfield covertly observes via hidden camera from another room. At first it appears that the couple has solved their marital problems, but things get ugly when one of sleazy bar owner David Carradine's goons answers an ad and gets dirt on the heroes. Caulfield is forced to videotape his wife with Carradine's political rival (Jan-Michael Vincent) in order to protect himself. The angry Caulfield then tries to turn the tables on Carradine, who is blackmailing him, and ends up marked for murder. A solid genre entry, silkily photographed and filled with familiar faces and great bodies, Animal Instincts is one of the more entertaining entries in a seemingly endless cycle, and was followed by two sequels. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

- Maxwell Caulfield, Jan-Michael Vincent, (more)

A middle-aged owner of an L.A. dress shop acts out his mid-life crisis in timeless movie fashion by dumping his wife in favor of a gorgeous young model. This slick, fast-paced but vacuous production has a plot that horror buffs will find all too familiar: it serves up a group of idiotic young people as standard zombie-fodder -- including the nominal protagonist (Eric Larson) who is paying a visit to a remote mountain cabin to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his grandparents. Since this cabin was apparently built in Evil Dead country, the poor saps are beset by the title breeze -- the horrific result of some mystical mumbo-jumbo concocted by Grandpa -- which proceeds to possess the living and bring the dead back to life in a whirlwind of unconvincing make-up effects. This derivative film borrows elements from dozens of horror hits but does nothing interesting with any of them -- though the filmmakers deserve some credit for attempting some ambitious and surreal dream sequences, considering the limited budget. ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi
