This audacious blend of cinematic, theatrical, and operatic styles contrasts the lives and loves of Mary, Queen of Scots, and Elizabeth, Queen of England, as it blends the text of the play by Friedrich Schiller with the music from Gaetano Donizetti's opera on the same themes. Shot in authentic historical locations rather than studio sets, Maria Stuarda also employs the talents of operatic legends Luciano Pavarotti as the Earl of Leicester and Joan Sutherland as Scottish monarch Mary Stuart. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

In another off-the-wall Achternbusch satire that is slow-paced, often unfunny and burdened with wooden acting, at least to those who are not Achternbusch fans, a factory worker carries around a stuffed dog (taxidermist-style) filled with gold and interacts with the Prime Minister, who drinks what looks like ketchup out of a bottle. Some of the comic barbs seem a little obscure, and other jokes -- like a Japanese tour guide played by a very Teutonic actress -- raise a chuckle for some viewers and a question mark for others. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Librettist Ranieri de' Calzabigi and composer Christoph Gluck co-crafted the opera Orfeo ed Eurydice, adapting the basic narrative from the mythical legend that recounts Orpheus's rescue of his bride, Eurydice, from the underworld. This filmed record of the 1982 production of Orfeo, as staged at The Glyndebourne Festival Opera, features a woman - the legendary Dame Janet Baker - in the male role of Orpheus, in a performance that many consider the pinnacle of her long and illustrious career. Elisabeth Baker co-stars as Eurydice; the production features musical accompaniment by The Glyndebourne Festival Chorus and The London Philharmonic Orchestra, as conducted by Raymond Leppard. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
