Middle-aged Durval (Ary Franca) runs an unhip record shop that specializes in vinyl, out of the house he shares with his elderly mother Carmita (Etty Fraser). Since his mother's eccentricities have grown more pronounced with age, Durval decides to hire a maid to help out around the store and the house -- but at a salary that pretty much scares off most serious applicants. When Celia (Leticia Sabatella) applies, however, Durval acts quickly to bring her on. Later that day, Celia takes off to run some errands and doesn't return. As Durval and Carmita become concerned, they go into the Celia's room and discover a young girl named Kiki (Isabela Guassco) and a note stating Celia's intention to return in two days time. As mother and son begin to grow attached to the youngster, they learn in the news that a millionaire's daughter has been kidnapped and the child's whereabouts are unknown -- and all the kidnappers are either dead or in custody, and Celia happens to be amongst the deceased. Horrified, Durval suggests the authorities be notified at once, but his mother has other plans that she intends to fulfill at any cost. Marking Brazilian director Anna Muylaert's directorial debut, Durval Discos was also an official selection to the 2002 Montreal World Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi
