Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.) decides to open up a roadside restaurant with a chance acquaintance named Vinnie Whithead (Ken Lynch). From the outset of this enterprise, Rocky can't help but notice that an elderly man is watching every move he and Vinnie make. . .and no sooner has the restaurant opened than someone breaks into the joint. Investigating, Jim (James Garner) discovers that Vinnie is a retired mob boss, and that his trail has been dogged for the last 50 years by retired federal officer Eddie LaSalle (Victor Jory). An autopsy performed by Quincy (Jack Klugman) determines that Mrs. Martha Steele (Karen Philipp) died of a cerebral hemmorhage, supposedly caused by an encounter with a burglar. But Quincy is certain that the brain damage occurred long before the burglary--and he suspects that Mrs. Steele was the victim of an abusive husband (played by Robert Colbert). Unfortunately, his investigation is dead-ended by the refusal of the Steeles' friends to discuss the matter or cooperate with the authorities. It doesn't take long for Bob to establish a reputation for having the only "floating therapy session" in Chicago. Also appearing are Lucian Scott as Mr. Vickers, Jess Nadelman as Bud Brey, Don Nagel as the waiter, and Bob Newhart's real-life father-in-law, Bill Quinn as Eddie. Kojak (Telly Savalas) is certain that he has finally nailed an elusive heroin dealer when the man is accused of shooting and killing a prominent plastic surgeon.
