Filmmaker Feroz Khan explores the tragedy of a man who transformed the soul of a nation, but could not provide salvation for his own flesh and blood. His father's identity the bane of his existence, Harilal converted to Islam as an act of rebellion, reconverted back to Hinduism as an act of penance, and eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of alcoholism. Intertwined lives serve as the springboard to raucous comedy in this lively effort from director Priyadarshan. A seemingly intentionally confusing comedy that layers cliché upon cliché in almost absurdist fashion, the story begins with the introduction of Nadu (Aftab Shivdasani), an aspiring singer who has come to strike it big in Mumbai. Although Nadu is quick to land an apartment, a catch comes when the landlord reveals that she only rents to married couples, a situation that is somewhat remedied when he meets Anjali (Rimi Sen), the village vixen in need of some quick cash and a place to stay. After making a string of social commentaries, Canadian director Deepa Mehta satirizes India's beloved genre in the lighthearted romantic musical Bollywood/Hollywood. Indo-Canadian millionaire Rahul (Rahul Khanna) goes against the wishes of his mother and grandmother to date the Caucasian pop star Kimberly (Jessica Paré); however, she gets killed in an accident and he is left devastated. His mother (Moushumi Chatterjee) seizes the opportunity and announces that he must get engaged to an Indian girl before his sister is allowed to wed. This is complicated by the fact that his sister is already engaged and pregnant. Under pressure, Rahul enlists the help of Sue (supermodel Lisa Ray), a professional escort who agrees to play the part of his Indian fiancée. He thinks she is really Hispanic, and she claims to have no love for traditional Indian men. Throughout his sister's wedding preparations, Sue begins to befriend his entire family, including the tough old grandmother (Dina Pathak). Abbas-Mustan's Bollywood mystery-drama Humraaz stars Akshaye Khanna and Amisha Patel. The pair play Karan and Priya, a dance act that are booked to play an ocean cruise. The man who booked them, Raj Singhania (Bobby Deol), falls in love with Priya. The three engage in a variety of endeavors, including murder and blackmail, in order to end up with the person they desire. As Dil Chahta Hai opens, Siddarth, known as Sid (Akshaye Khanna) is racing to the hospital due to an unexplained emergency. There, he is reunited with his old friend, Sameer (Saif Ali Khan). Sameer calls the third member of the trio, Akash (Bombay superstar Aamir Khan from Lagaan), who tells him he's not going to join them at the hospital, due to an unresolved dispute between him and Sid. The film then flashes back to earlier, happier days, to show us what came between the three close friends. Sid was the studious, serious one, with a hidden artistic side, while Sameer foolishly let himself be ruled by the woman in his life. Akash could never limit himself to one woman. He was a playboy who claimed he didn't believe in love. Sameer found himself unexpectedly falling for Pooji (Sonali Kulkarni of Mission Kashmir), the young woman his parents have tried to arrange for him to marry. Akash's father grew concerned about his son's immaturity, and sent Akash to Australia to work for his company. There, he ran into Shalini (Preity Zinta, who also starred in Mission Kashmir), a girl who once rejected him in a Bombay nightclub. She's engaged to be married to Rohit (Ayub Khan), but as the two spend time together, Akash falls hard for Shalini. For his part, Sid met a beautiful divorcee, Tara (Dimple Kapadia), but his friends and family weren't ready to accept their relationship. Eventually, we work our way back to the present, and find out what's become of the three friends and their romantic entanglements.
