Desperate to escape Lima's cold winter blast after his father's recent suicide, a grieving son finds himself unexpectedly joined by his beautiful stepsister and her domineering husband in director Ricardo de Montreuil's entry into the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. Santiago has just lost his father, and now the last thing he wants to deal with is another brutal winter in Lima. Looking to escape to more picturesque surroundings, Santiago sets his sights on the inviting beaches of Máncura. Just as Santiago is about to leave, however, his stepsister Ximena and her arrogant husband Inigo show up and invite themselves along for the ride. After picking up a wandering hitchhiker on the side of the road, the hard-partying travelers finally arrive at their destination. An orphaned, seventeen year-old deep-sea diver struggling to make ends meet in an impoverished Brazilian fishing village attempts to win the heart of a tempestuous, television-addicted flirt in director Kirill Mikhanovsky's award-winning romantic drama. As a child, Jusce (Jose Maria Alves) lost his father when the old man submerged to harvest lobster and never surfaced again. Subsequently forced to grow up before his time, Jusce himself now descends into the same waters that claimed his father in hopes of gathering enough crustaceans to get the family boat in working order. Once Jusce is able to realize his dream, he hopes to set sail with the beautiful Ana (Rubia Rafaelle) so that the pair can create a new future together on faraway soil. Unfortunately for Jusce, Ana seems to have fallen under the spell of hotshot dune buggy driver Rogério, and has become hopelessly preoccupied with the popular nighttime telenovela that hold the entire village spellbound. Fernando Meirelles' City of God is a sweeping tale of how crime affects the poor population of Rio de Janeiro. Though the narrative skips around in time, the main focus is on Cabeleira who formed a gang called the Tender Trio. He and his best friend, Bené (Phelipe Haagensen), become crime lords over the course of a decade. When Bené is killed before he can retire, Lil' Zé attempts to take out his arch enemy, Sandro Cenoura (Matheus Nachtergaele). But Sandro and a young gangster named Mane form an alliance and begin a gang war with Lil' Zé. Amateur photographer Buscape (Alexandre Rodrigues) takes pictures of the brutal crime war, making their story famous. City of God was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
