Kang Shin-il Movies
This slick and tense thriller with comedic elements from South Korean director Shin Tae-ra concerns an aggressive unit of the Russian mafia, detached to infiltrate Korea and filch a cutting-edge chemical weapon. The Korean government issues two secret agents to stop the Russians - both masked by undercover identities: Ahn Soo-ji (Kim Ha-neul), a tough-as-nails female martial arts pro who continues to draw the envy of all of her colleagues, and her male counterpart, klutzy and inept rookie Lee Jae-joon (Kang ji-Hwan), whose unfortunate presence leads to a series of outrageous blunders. Complicating matters, it seems, is the fact that the couple (polar opposites, who hate each other passionately), were once romantically involved. Soo-ji's requirement to maintain a secret life as an agent destroyed the couple by preventing them from maintaining an open relationship. Now, as it so happens, both are agents, and happen to serendipitously run into each other on the job. Though it seems nearly impossible, they must figure out a way to navigate through the possibility of a rekindled relationship, and attempt to save the world at the same time. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Director Shin Tae-ra teams with screenwriter Lee Yeong-jong to adapt author Yusuke Kishi's 1997 novel concerning an insurance investigator investigating a brutal series of murders. Jeon Jun-oh (Hwang Jeong-min) is a bespectacled former bank employee who now makes his living as an insurance investigator. Summoned to the formidable country estate of potential client Park Chung-bae (Gang Shin-il), Jeon is unnerved by his host's jittery behavior, and shocked to find the body of Park's seven year old son hanging lifeless from the ceiling. Everything in this house has a grim aura, including Park's wife Shin Yi-hwa (Yu Seon) - a grieving cripple whose recent stab at suicide is evidenced by the jagged wounds that mar her wrists. After touring the house, Jeon becomes convinced that Park is in fact a psychopath attempting to carry out an elaborate insurance scam. Not only does Jeon suspect that Park killed his own son, but he believes the murderous patriarch is now intent on doing away with his wife as well. When Jeon's attempt to convince the authorities of Park's guilt seem to fall of deaf ears, the sleuthing insurance investigator becomes obsessed with the prospect of uncovering the truth about this strange case. Unfortunately for Jeon and his unsuspecting wife Mi-na (Kim Seo-hyeong), this mystery is much deadlier - and deeper - than anyone ever imagined imagined. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Directed by Kim Eui-seok, Cheongpung myeongweol (Sword in the Moon) is set in 17th century Korea, a chaotic time period in which the once Confucian society was threatened by an attempted Japanese invasion. The film is centered around an elite band of imperial guards hired to protect the old ways. Choi Ji-hwan (Choi Min-su) and Yun Gyu-yeob (Jo Jae-hyeon) make the backbone of the group, but unforeseen circumstances cause Yun to turn on Choi, the latter of which disappears from the scene after having been revealed as responsible for several murders. Yun's search results in apprehending swordswoman Shi-yeong (Kim Bo-gyeong), Choi's lover and partner in crime, who Yun tortures for information on Choi's whereabouts. Eventually, Choi and Yun meet and prepare for a final battle. The film also features Lee Jong-su, Jeon Seong-hwan, Gi Ju-bong, Yu Yeon-su, and Kang Shin-il. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

Detective Kang Chul-Choong (Sol Kyung-gu) is a tough, hotheaded cop. He is also as corrupt as they come. He never makes an arrest because he'd sooner take a bribe. But when an internal affairs investigation threatens, Kang's older and more circumspect partner, Song Haeng-gi (Kim Ju-bong), commits suicide, leaving Kang slightly unhinged. Cho Gyu-hwan (Seung-jae Lee of Attack the Gas Station!) is a wealthy fund manager and family man who also has a problem controlling his temper. Cho gets angry when his elderly father calls in a loan in order to help a struggling orphanage. Cho has the money invested in a can't-miss stock, and will lose millions if he pays his father back, so one rainy night, while Kang is nearby on a stakeout, Cho brutally murders his parents. While making his escape, wearing a hooded raincoat, Cho has his first encounter with Kang. He literally bumps into him on the street, and when Kang upbraids him for it, Cho, not realizing Kang is a cop, slashes Kang's face. When Kang hears about the vicious double murder, he realizes that he was attacked by the killer, and joins the investigation. Suddenly, police work isn't about the money any more for Kang. Kang didn't get a good look at Cho that night. But after questioning the vain, supercilious young man, Kang immediately suspects him. Cho uses his powerful connections in the police department to thwart Kang's efforts, but Kang is determined to deliver his own unique brand of justice, no matter what the cost.
