Oz Perkins Movies

As the son of the man who portrayed one of the silver screen's most memorable maniacs, Oz Perkins' first role found him following in father Anthony's footsteps as a young Norman Bates in Psycho II (1983). Soon growing into a talented actor in his own right, it wasn't long before the younger Perkins was establishing himself in such films as Six Degrees of Separation (1993) and Wolf (1994). Born Osgood Robert Perkins II to Anthony Perkins and actress/photographer Berry Berenson in New York City in 1974, Oz graduated from L.A.'s Harvard-Westlake School before earning a B.A. in English from New York University and subsequently beginning an acting career. After exuding his comic talents in such films as Legally Blonde and Not Another Teen Movie (both 2001), Perkins moved into edgier territory with a small role in the independent drama Secretary in 2002. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A man struggling with his sanity is being pushed to the brink by visions of violence and death in this psychological thriller from first time director Nick Simon. Cole (Mark Kelly) is a guy wrestling with more than his share of troubles -- after losing his white collar job, he's been reduced to working for a cleaning service and has developed a dependence on pain medication that causes him to hallucinate, all of which is putting a serious strain on his marriage. Cole also hasn't felt especially stable since he saw his friend Eric (Billy Burke) murder his family and then turn the gun on himself. Near the end of a busy week, Cole's boss persuades him to take on one more assignment: Henry Sharpe (Oz Perkins) is a wealthy man who wants his mansion cleaned before he shows it to prospective buyers. While it would normally take a small crew a few days to fully clean the big house, Henry offers Cole $5,000 in cash to do the job in one night. That's more than Cole can afford to turn down, but over the course of the night Henry keeps dropping hints that something sinister has happened in his mansion, and Cole isn't sure if he's cleaning up a murder scene or letting his imagination get the better of him again. Removal also features Elliott Gould, Emma Caulfield and Kelly Brook. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A small group of amateur cooks and kitchen guests discover exactly why some refer to the kitchen as the "heart of the house" in director Allison Hebble's intimate drama. As the heat of the afternoon gives way to a pleasantly mild summer evening, thirty year-old Lily Ireland (Christima Hendrix) begins preparing Insalata Caprese for her much-older love interest - a Spanish born photo journalist named Michael (Jaoquim de Almeida). Meanwhile, in a nearby apartment, Chris (Oz Perkins) watches nervously as his pregnant wife Shelly (Leisha Hailey) struggles to make the perfect lasagna. When the dish proves inedible and Chris orders a pizza, hormonal Shelly tearfully seeks solace in the company of her best friend Jude (Rachel Hunter). Despite knowing well that her lover Celia (Clare Carey) won't make it home in time for dinner, Jude passionately assembles an elaborate Italian meal that is destined to become leftovers before it is even cooked. In another part of town, as filmmaker Celia works on a movie scene featuring an elaborate kitchen set-up, the famished crew hungrily devours pizza just out of camera range. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A road trip rolls through a small town where the line between the dead and the living has become a bit problematic in this horror parody. Sadomasochism provides the backdrop for a very unusual employer/employee relationship in this very offbeat romantic drama from filmmaker Steven Shainberg. Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a shy young woman, who, after a brief spell in a mental institution, is released in the care of her overprotective mother (Lesley Ann Warren) and hard-drinking father (Stephen McHattie). Hoping to make good on her own, Lee begins looking for a job, and in her free time indulges in her odd habit of inflicting pain upon herself in various ways. Lee is hired as a secretary by E. Edward Grey (James Spader), a grim and ruthlessly efficient attorney who warns her that her work will be both dull and demanding. Lee takes to the job with genuine enthusiasm, and while she's recently acquired a new boyfriend, Peter (Jeremy Davies), she's far more intrigued by Grey's coldly patrician demeanor. While Grey often criticizes Lee, she seems to thrive on his abuse, but one day he crosses a line when he insists upon spanking her after some minor mistake. Lee quite enjoys the treatment, and wants it to continue, but Grey can no longer take pleasure humiliating Lee when he knows that she likes it; he fires her, despite her pleas to be allowed to stay. Finally discovering the key to her sexual and emotional needs, Lee tries to persuade Peter to be rough with her, but he simply doesn't have the taste or talent for it, and Lee soon maps out a last-ditch effort to win back her position with Grey, whatever the cost. Secretary won a special award for "Originality" at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Former MTV executive Joel Gallen makes his feature directorial debut with this broad spoof of the popular teen comedy genre, lampooning dozens of movies including American Pie (1999), American Beauty (1999), Bring It On (2000), Clueless (1995), She's All That (1999), Road Trip (2000), Can't Hardly Wait (1998), 10 Things I Hate About You (1999), Never Been Kissed (1999), and even the teen films of an earlier era such as The Breakfast Club (1985). At the aptly titled "John Hughes High School," aspiring artist Janey Briggs (Chyler Leigh) is an outcast because of her plain, bespectacled looks and paint-splattered overalls. Football hero Jake Wyler (Chris Evans) makes a bet that he can transform Janey into a gorgeous prom queen, a wager he may come to regret as he discovers Janey's true inner beauty. As their relationship blossoms, several other characters are limned, including a Nasty Cheerleader (Jaime Pressly), a Token Black Guy (Deon Richmond), a Stupid Fat Guy (Ron Lester), an Obsessed Best Friend (Eric Jungmann), an Undercover Reporter (Beverly Polcyn), the Cruelest Girl in School (Mia Kirshner), a Cocky Blonde Guy (Eric Christian Olsen), and several others. A nod to the multiple films that inspired it, Not Another Teen Movie (2001) was originally to have been entitled "Ten Things I Hate About Clueless Road Trips When I Can't Hardly Wait to Be Kissed." ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Reese Witherspoon stars in this romantic comedy, the feature film debut of award-winning Australian director Robert Luketic. Fearing that his snooty friends and family will never accept the bubble-headed Elle, however, Warner dumps her before heading off to graduate law school at Harvard University. Determined to win back her man, Elle enrolls in the same imposing institution, quickly becoming an object of scorn and ridicule, especially to Warner's old prep school flame (Selma Blair). Despite her penchant for malls, makeup, and tanning, Elle is no dummy and is soon showing elite Ivy League snobs a thing or two about class, self-confidence, and courtroom victory. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Jack Nicholson becomes a werewolf in this bizarre comedy-horror film directed by Mike Nichols. Nicholson plays Will Randall, a book editor with a testosterone deficit who has just been sacked at his publishing firm by a new boss, Raymond Alden (Christopher Plummer). A colleague, Stewart Swinton (James Spader), whom Randall thought was his friend, betrays him. Randall's personality changes after he hits a wolf with his car and gets bitten by the creature. He immediately feels more powerful, has heightened hearing and vision, and sets about to right the wrongs in his life. He visits Alden at the publisher's mansion to protest his dismissal, and he is asked to leave -- but Alden's daughter Laura (Michelle Pfeiffer) asks him to stay for lunch. Laura loves to defy her father. Will tells her about the wolf bite, and she becomes attracted to him. But because werewolves usually kill the ones they love, Laura is in danger. Will reasserts his place in the publishing world, supported by his loyal secretary Mary (Eileen Atkins), and his relationship with Laura deepens. ~ Michael Betzold, Rovi

Two socialites find their view of the world changed when a young man takes advantage of their preconceptions in this thoughtful comedy-drama. Flan and Ouisa Kittredge (Donald Sutherland and Stockard Channing) are a married couple who have built highly successful careers as art dealers catering to Manhattan's upper crust. The Kittredges are entertaining friends one evening when a young black man named Paul (Will Smith) appears at their door. Paul says that he's a close friend of their children, with whom he attended boarding school, and he's just been mugged and needs to get off the street for a moment. Flan and Ouisa invite him in, and they are immediately taken by Paul's intelligence and charm; he offers to prepare dinner, regales them with stories about his father, Sidney Poitier, and ends up spending the night at their apartment. However, the next morning Flan and Ouisa discover that they've been had; Paul is actually a con artist from the streets who has been pulling the wool over the eyes of many of their friends -- and his actions are beginning to have serious consequences. John Guare adapted the script from his own successful stage play; the supporting cast includes Ian McKellen, Mary Beth Hurt, Bruce Davison, and Heather Graham. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A sequel to one of the most popular horror films of all time, this psychological thriller received a pleasantly surprised, positive critical reception. Anthony Perkins returns as Norman Bates, who has just been released from an insane asylum after 22 years, having been judged clinically sane by the State of California over the objections of Lila Crane Loomis (Vera Miles), sister to one of Norman's murder victims. Norman returns home to the hotel and hilltop mansion he once inhabited with his mother. As a parole condition, Norman is hired at a local diner, where he struggles to join mainstream society, despite the stares of patrons aware of his past. At the diner, Norman befriends Mary (Meg Tilly), a waitress, and it seems that he may be putting some semblance of a life back together. But then Norman begins to experience hallucinatory encounters with his long-dead mother, including a handwritten note, a phone call, and a sighting of her standing at her favorite window. Is Norman's psychosis manifesting itself again, or are old enemies attempting to drive him back into an institution? As the pressure mounts, bodies pile up, and Norman's fragile hold on normality becomes more and more tenuous. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi
