Based in part on an actual incident, the independent drama 100 Proof records one especially bad day in the lives of Rae (Pamela Stewart) and Carla (Tara Bellando), two tough but misused women living in a small Kentucky town. Rae and Carla get by through a combination of low-paying jobs, petty theft, and occasional prostitution, and often resort to drugs and alcohol to blot out the misery of their lives. Over the course of 24 hours, the two women con Arco (Jack Stubblefield Johnson) and Sissy (Minnie Bates Yancey), an elderly couple they've been hired to look after, out of their pension check; have a run-in with Rae's father (Jim Varney), a sleazy and abusive man who tries to pimp his daughter to his friends; score cocaine from a ne'er-do-well at the local store; and sink into a depression fueled by drugs that eventually explodes into shocking violence. 100 Proof was the debut feature for writer/director Jeremy Horton, and received strong reviews for its grim but true-to-life atmosphere and the performances of Pamela Stewart and Tara Bellando. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A college student clashes with his co-ed roommate, then falls for her in this romantic comedy. Sheltered freshman Chris Wooden (Patrick Dempsey) arrives at his university ready to hone his writing skills. His hard-partying roommate, however, proves to be a distraction. Alex Page (Helen Slater) -- short for Alexandra -- has been placed on a guys' floor by mistake, and the aspiring actress/good-time girl drives Chris crazy. Eventually, as both students hone their respective crafts and spend more time together, they become friends and finally lovers. But Alex's freewheeling ways put a kink in things; Chris is an old-fashioned guy, and he wants a plain-vanilla girlfriend. Things come to a head when a random biker Alex promised to marry shows up looking to rearrange Chris' face. Happy Together is one of the few feature credits of Mel Damski, who has directed countless TV movies since the late '70s. A deliciously nasty black comedy, Heathers is set at a cliquish high school in Ohio. The most exclusive of those cliques is the Heathers, comprised of the prettiest and most popular girls in town. The group's leader is the manipulative Kim Walker, who orchestrates the humiliation of anyone who fails to meet her standards. Eventually, Heathers member Winona Ryder begins to exhibit a conscience; together with her hardcase boyfriend Christian Slater, Ryder plots to avenge all the unfortunate victims of the group. Before long, Heather (Kim Walker) ends up dead along with Kurt and Ram, with poignant suicide notes posted near their bodies. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
