Taped approximately six weeks before the 100th birthday of comedy legend Bob Hope, this elaborate (and highly-rated) TV "love letter" to "Old Ski Nose" is hosted by former Today Show anchor Jane Pauley. The special covers the familiar biographical ground, tracing British-born Leslie Townes Hope from his first paying gig as a Charlie Chaplin imitator at age 12, then on to nearly two decades of singing, dancing, and adlibbing in vaudeville before achieving stardom on the Broadway stage in the 1933 musical Roberta. Achieving even greater success in films and on radio, Hope still remained just another entertainer until he began his celebrated, indefatigable tours of far-flung military camps in WWII, thereby kicking off a humanitarian "second career" that would extend well past the Vietnam era. Finally, the program covers in detail Hope's years on television, specifically the 285 specials which he headlined on NBC from 1950 to 1996. Many of the film clips will be familiar to even the most casual Hope fans, with one noteworthy exception: A clip from a mid-'80s Mike Douglas Show, in which Hope engages in a putting match with a two-and-a-half-year-old Tiger Woods. Dozens of Hope's contemporaries and fans from all walks of life show up to offer their own special tributes, though sadly many of his co-star's from his classic films -- notably Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour -- are no longer around to put in their two cents' worth. Nor does Bob Hope himself make a "live" appearance on 100 Years of Hope & Humor, though it is the understatement of the century to say he is certainly there in spirit. And need we add that the theme of the show (in more ways than one) is "Thanks for the Memory"? ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The 2000 U.S. Open was a truly millennial event. Golf's newest wunderkind Tiger Woods accepted the 100-year-old title with ease, after a record-breaking display on the hallowed grounds of Pebble Beach among an historic collection of athletes. From the final Open appearance of the great Jack Nicklaus to the highest Nielsen rating in two decades, the centennial tournament racked up accolades. Woods aggressively pursued the title early on, setting records at every turn, including the largest recorded lead in an Open after 36 and 54 holes. Wood's final tally of 272 tied the record for the lowest overall score in the U.S. Open, first achieved by Nicklaus in 1980, but his 15-stroke victory completely erased the previous record set 101 years before. Woods acknowledged his third major championship with modesty, knowing his performance far outpaced many's expectations. 2000 U.S. Open: Tiger Roars! captures a chapter of American sports history that will be hailed as one of the greatest of all time.

Hailed as the site of golf's inception, St. Andrews once again became host to the British Open Championship in 2000. The noteworthy homecoming was made possible by the lengthening of the 500-year-old course and the participation of an unprecedented group of players led by Tiger Woods, who was among a handful of golfers to win all four major championships. In commemoration of the millennial event, two documentaries showcase the club's long road to fame.
The Open Century, narrated by Ian Cooldridge, describes a century of impressive performers from Gene Sarazen to Nick Faldo. Beginning with the earliest version of the game whose roots run deep at St. Andrews, the video traces the history of the Open through the remembrances of players, leaving the viewer with an austere and impressive understanding of both golf and the society that helped create it. The Magnificent Eight traces the history of the club's ascension. A journey through the town's archives revisits the legends that enfold the event, while also providing a historical background for the venue's importance. Told through the words of the players that helped build the club's reputation, the documentaries themselves seem historic; the beginning of a new century seems a fitting time to pay lush tribute to the place where it all began.

Golf fans will enjoy listening to commentator Jack Whitaker narrate this film about the young Tiger Woods, who managed to make a dramatic entry into the world of sports. Clips recall how young Tiger first appeared as a two-year old on the Mike Douglas Show and continued trying to master his craft throughout his childhood, teens, and early adulthood. Those who have seen his dad on TV are probably already aware of the loving guidance this man has been providing to his son since he was a toddler. Those who know Tiger best are interviewed, including Stanford University coach Wally Goodwin and current coach Butch Harmon. Outstanding moments are captured, including the time when Tiger achieved his historic victory at the Masters back in 1997. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi
