In the cities of Juarez, Chihuahua, and Laredo along the Mexico-U.S. border, hundreds of young women in malquiladoras factories are either murdered or abducted year after year. As the crimes continually gone unpunished due to the corruption that extends to the highest level of the Mexican government, grieving parents are frequently forced to accept the devastating fact that they may never know the ultimate fate of their beloved children. In this documentary, filmmakers Alejandra Sanchez and José Antonio Cordero implement a narrative approach that is unique to a woman's vantage point to speak with the journalists and police officials who have covered these countless cases, as well as the factory workers and family members directly affected by the crimes. With their film, directors Sanchez and Cordero aim not only to illuminate a national crisis in Mexico, but also highlight the disheartening lack of support of world neighbor the United States in ensuring that justice is served on behalf of the victims. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Veteran screen star Tommy Lee Jones makes his directorial debut with the fractured tale of murder and injustice on the U.S.-Mexico border scripted by Amores Perros and 21 Grams screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga. Mike Norton (Barry Pepper) is a fresh-faced Border Patrol officer in Cibolo County, TX, whose dedication to his new job leaves his lonely wife, Lou Ann (January Jones), with little to do but spend her days at the local diner, where she strikes up a friendship with waitress Rachel (Melissa Leo). Despite her own status as a married woman, Rachel is unfulfilled in her marriage and is intimately involved with both rugged rancher Pete Perkins (Tommy Lee Jones) and local sheriff Belmont (Dwight Yoakam). Soon after Pete hires Mexican illegal Melquiades Estrada (Julio César Cedillo) as a ranch hand, the growing bond between the pair is suddenly shattered when, in a moment of panic on a routine patrol, Mike hastily guns down the innocent Melquaides. When an enraged Pete learns that Mike has unceremoniously buried the illegal immigrant in an unmarked desert grave and local authorities opt to overlook the case, he kidnaps the crooked lawman and sets out to ensure that justice is served with or without the involvement of the local police force. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A pair of e-mailing lovers discover romance is more difficult in the real world than in cyberspace, especially when a highly unexpected rivalry comes into the picture in this understated comedy drama. Norman (Noël Burton) is a middle-aged college professor from Montreal who, through an on-line dating service, has been corresponding with Gladys (Vanessa Bauche), an attractive younger woman from Mexico. Emboldened by the dating service's prediction that their relationship has a 61 percent chance of lasting, Norman flies to Mexico to ask for Gladys' hand in marriage. Gladys accepts, but only under the condition that her mother, Fernanda (Susana Salazar), can join them in Canada. Norman agrees, but it isn't long before both Norman and Gladys discover the chemistry they enjoyed through the mail doesn't work nearly as well in person. Gladys wonders aloud if Norman actually wrote his own letters, and Norman starts to suspect his new bride is more interested in a green card than in him. Matters become all the more difficult when Norman finds himself becoming infatuated with Fernanda, who is not much older than he is and quite attractive for her age. A Silent Love was the first feature film from director Federico Hidalgo, who co-wrote the screenplay with Paulina Robles, his spouse. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

One woman searches for peace in a life that offers her little respite in this melodrama from Mexico. Mariana (Vanessa Bauche) has lived a life that began in chaos when her mother was killed in an accident before Mariana was born; the baby was saved, and then sold to a wealthy couple through a black-market adoption agency. As she grows to adulthood, Mariana finds herself often feuding with her adopted mother Dolores (Blanca Sanchez), who refuses to give her a share of the family's estate. In time, Mariana becomes involved with Carlos Gallardo (Juan Claudio Retes) and pursues an increasingly decadent lifestyle with him until he falls to his death from a window during an argument. In a panic, Mariana runs away, finding solace with Sebastian (Osvaldo Benavides), a stable and spiritually oriented man who allows her to join him on a pilgrimage to the rain forest. As Sebastian follows his higher power, Mariana tries to find some closure regarding her troubled childhood by searching for her long-lost biological father. Piedras Verdes was the first feature film from director Angel Flores Torres, who previously directed a number of popular music videos. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Murder, mob justice and a young man's coming of age are brought together in this thriller filmed in Mexico. Ramon (Diego Luna), a young man who lives in a small Mexican farming community, one day finds the body of Adela (Laila Saab) in a field, stabbed to death. The incident is doubly upsetting for Ramon, because he was in love with the girl, though he never did anything about it. The town's sheriff (Hector Alterio) quickly names a culprit, known as the Gypsy (Karra Elejalde). But while the Gypsy was elsewhere at the time of the murder, he can't proclaim his innocence, as he was with his lover at the time, a married woman. Ramon senses something is wrong, but isn't sure what to do -- especially when many in town are pressuring him to avenge the death of the woman he loved, despite the fact it was no more than a schoolboy's crush. The debut film from director Gabriel Retes, Un Dulce Olor A Muerte/A Sweet Scent of Death was shown at the 1999 Guadalajara Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Those who are familiar with social movements in Mexico in the 1970s may find this simple drama significantly more compelling, as the student movements of that period form the backdrop for the main story. This film celebrates the friendship that developed between two high school girls who have each recently moved to Toluca, a provincial capital city in Mexico. Not only do they manage to retain their friendship despite their both falling in love with the same boy, but they are joined in grief when he dies. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
