Following up on his acclaimed debut The Myth of Fingerprints, Bart Freundlich spins this drama that poses the question "what would it be like to run away from your life?" The film centers on a restless thirtysomething New Yorker named Cal (Billy Crudup) who one day drives off into the open road, leaving his wife and infant son behind. A series of flashbacks describe Cal's domestic malaise and disillusionment with his life. On the road, Cal encounters a number of unusual characters who are similarly tethered and drifting. One is named Dulcie (Julianne Moore), an emotionally fragile woman looking for her lost son. Through his interaction with Dulcie, Cal reflects on his own family and soon finds himself heading to his boyhood home where his father lives. In this thriller, an introverted laser-research scientist journeys to Miami to attend a weapons conference and finds himself romantically entangled with a gorgeous model. A confirmed bookworm, the scientist is puzzled and flattered by her interest. He becomes more puzzled when FBI agents contact him and have him steal important documents. Later, another FBI agent appears and tells him that the two previous agents worked for the enemy. Meanwhile a gangster working for a prominent Miami Don, has kidnapped the model and is torturing her because he thinks she may have information about her sister, a mob courier who took off with a fortune in smuggled emeralds. More mayhem ensues as he tries to rescue her and finds himself further entangled with the FBI, the treacherous courier, and the mob. Flamboyant window dresser Hollywood Montrose (Meshach Taylor) provides the link between this film and the original Mannequin after the departure of Kim Cattrall and Andrew McCarthy from the cast. Hollywood has now been promoted to the head of Prince & Company's Visual Display Department. He takes on a new assistant, Jason (William Ragsdale) who, in times past, was the dauphin of the kingdom of Hauptmann-Koenig. One thousand years ago, he lost his beloved Jessie (Kristy Swanson) when an evil sorcerer (Terry Kiser) turned her into a wooden icon, now known as the Enchanted Peasant Girl. As a tribute to Hauptmen-Koenig, the Enchanted Peasant Girl is being sent to Prince & Company for a window display. Jason awakens Jessie and the two get re-acquainted, having a millennium of things to catch up on.
