Carmen Boni Movies
Carmen Boni plays La Femme en Homme (The Woman Dressed as a Man) in this Gallic romp. The real star of the show, however, is Andre Dubosc, cast as a misogynistic old nobleman. Told that he is to take charge of his grandson, Dubosc is taken aback when he discovers that "he" is actually a "she." At first rejecting the girl, the old coot finally comes to love and accept her. Only the pronounced Italian accent of leading lady Carmen Boni detracts from the comic credibility of the tale. But after all, Boni was the wife of director Augusto Genina, whose impressive list of credits allowed him leeway to indulge in a bit of favoritism now and then. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Paramount's 1930 domestic drama Sarah and Son was also filmed in a number of foreign language versions. The Italian version, Richimao del Cuore, stars Carmen Boni and Carlo Lombardi in the roles originated by Ruth Chatterton and Fredric March. Forced to give up her baby for adoption, actress Suzanne Sandi (Boni) returns home 10 years later to make a bid for custody of the child. The foster parents hire attorney Vanning (Lombardi) to protect their interests in court. But Suzanne pleads her case so eloquently that she wins not only her child but also the love of Vanning. Intended for exhibition in Italy alone, Richimao del Cuore proved quite successful when it was briefly shown in New York. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

La Vacanza del Diavolo is the Italian-language version of the 1930 Nancy Carroll vehicle The Devil's Holiday. Carmen Boni steps into the Carroll role as Lisa Hobart, a mercenary manicurist who plots to marry wealthy wheat heir Robert Stone (Maurizio D'Ancora). Despite the objections of his family, the couple elopes, whereupon Stone's father offers the girl a fortune if she'll agree to give the boy up. Never having been in love with him anyway, Lisa agrees to dump him but has a change of heart -- and conscience -- when Stone is gravely injured in an accident. Observers in 1930 felt that Nancy Carroll did it better. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Latin Quarter (Quartier Latin) was director Augusto Genina's sole cinematic contribution for 1928. Ivan Petrovitch is cast as Ralph, a wealthy young man who is invited to the artists' ball in Paris' Latin Quarter. Here he meets lovely aspiring painter Louise (Carmen Boni), with whom he instantly falls in love. Pretending to be an artist himself, Ralph leads Louise to believe that he is as poor as she, hoping that she'll love him for himself rather than his money. The truth comes out when Ralph is briefly distracted by a vampish young model (Gina Manes). Convinced that Ralph has gone off to Italy with his new "conquest," Louise falls seriously ill but immediately recovers when her sweetheart rushes back to her bedside. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Werner Krauss stars as The Jolly Peasant in this not-always-jolly confection. For the sake of his son, an aspiring priest, Krauss goes heavily into debt to finance the boy's evangelical education. But the son changes his mind and decides to become a doctor, breaking his old dad's heart. Metamorphosing into an impossible snob, the son doesn't even bother to invite his father to his high-society wedding. It is the boy's new bride, of peasant stock herself, who brings the young snot to his senses and arranges a reunion between father and son. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
