In this French psychological drama, a bank robber is finally released after serving 10 years. His being paroled is due to the influence of his old friend, a social worker. The ex-convict returns to his wife and begins living an honest life. Unfortunately, his old crook friends begin trying to lure him back to crime. Following a prison riot, the social worker ends up living in the same town as the ex-con. They become close friends until the ex-con's wife is killed during an accident. The plotline of Le Gitan concerns a devil-may-care "good badman" with gypsy blood flowing through his veins. Robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, our hero confounds the authorities in contemporary France. The film makes implications that the attitudes of French society towards the gypsies are to blame for his transformation into a criminal, though the director's sympathies clearly lie with the main character. Alain Delon plays the title role, while Annie Girardot plays a woman who helps him to escape the authorities. Officially a 1975 release, Gypsy may well have been completed several years earlier. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A predictable melodrama, Le Toubib is based on a novel by Jean Freustie about an unhappy surgeon and the tragedy of war. Jean-Marie (Alain Delon) has a successful practice in Paris when his marriage crumbles and he is sent to operate in a field hospital in an unspecified war zone in Europe. He is driven up the wall by Harmony (Veronique Jannot) an attractive assistant whose sunny disposition grates on the surgeon's nerves, or at least, on the one he has left. Then he discovers that Harmony is suffering from an incurable disease and the pathos begins. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

La Boum stars Sophie Marceau as a 13-year-old French girl, coping with domestic problems. Her parents, played by Claude Brasseur and Brigitte Fossey, are on the verge of a marital breakup. This is coupled by a traumatic move to Paris, and Marceau's problems in adjusting to her new surroundings and schoolmates. Though nothing new, La Boum is disarmingly diverting, a real audience pleaser (as proven by its huge international box-office take). Even as the film was making the American rounds, a sequel, La Boum 2, was in the editing stages. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Clothilde de Watteville (Lauren Hutton) is compared to "Hecate," a three-headed Greek fertility goddess and a protector of witches who came to be associated with Persphone and Hades. Clothilde/Hecate runs into Julien Rochelle (Bernard Giraudeau), a very young French diplomat in north Africa just before the outbreak of World War II and the two have a casual sexual encounter that leads to another such meeting, and another. His interest in her and his curiosity are heightened when she refuses to reveal any information about herself, and when she disappears for stretches at a time without any explanation. As his sexual passions increase at a par with his frustration at her behavior, he gives up trying to relate at all and walks out of the relationship. A few years later they meet at a diplomatic reception in Berne, the diplomat is older and perhaps wiser, but Clothilde's behavior is an inexplicable as ever. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

A Jewish Mafia-like family is running a prostitution ring, selling "protection," and operating gambling casinos -- more or less with impunity, and at peace with their Arab counterparts -- until a young gangster (Bernard Giraudeau) decides to pit the two ethnic factions against each other. Jewish cultural and religious events are celebrated by the Jewish gangsters, who promote family traditions -- in contrast to the police inspector who has no family and is out to do them all in. Focusing on the Jewish mob boss, the story has him undergoing some personal rehabilitation in the end. Actually, comparing the merits of ethnically and religiously different mobs of gangsters might be a little like comparing the respective beauty of a pair of week-old corpses. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Based on a successful cabaret theater play, Come to my Place, I'm Living with my Girlfriend features Guy (Michel Blanc) as a carefree and morally challenged gas station attendant suddenly in need of a place to live. It seems his boss caught him trying to cheat his customers, and Guy was thrown out on his ear. He saves the day for himself by wheedling his way into the good graces of two friends, Daniel (Bernard Girardeau) and Francoise (Therese Liotard), a young couple who are easy-going and willing to share their apartment with him "for a few days." The "few days" turn into week after week, as Guy connives to stretch out his good fortune as far as he can. Acting as though his welcome will never wear out, he further strains the relationship with Francoise and Daniel by entertaining a series of girlfriends - for whom he has an undying passion. His antics begin to short-circuit the happy relationship that Daniel and Francoise have always enjoyed, and sooner or later, the problem of "Guy" will have to be resolved before fuses are blown for good. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Professional soldier Bernard Giraudeau is enmeshed in an affair with the beautiful but very much married Laura Antonelli. Transferred to a remote outpost, Giraudeau discovers to his chagrin that the only woman in the region (Valeria D'Obici) is about as appealing as a plate of pickles. Even so, Giraudeau falls madly in love with the woman, utterly forgetting Antonelli. He also forgets that he's a human being at fade-out time, metamorphosing into an epileptic bear! Perhaps Passion of Love made more sense in its original French-language version, Passione D'Amore. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this run-of-the-mill crime drama, Bernard Giraudeau is Daniel Chetman, someone who wants to leave the life of violence he knew in his neighborhood -- and cannot do so because his nemesis, a strutting street gangster now involved with organized crime, continues to terrorize the inhabitants of Chetman's turf. After much spilled blood, a parade of ugly underground types, and various sexual scenes, Chetman reduces the forces of evil to a reasonable level of opposition -- but who knows if the neighborhood will be different in the end. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Based on the novel "Hotel Meuble" by Thomas Owen, this suspense thriller has a female police inspector Aurelia Maudru (Anny Duperey) living in a baroque apartment house in Brussels, the site of a nasty murder. All the inspector's neighbors are suspects in the case, and she is hard-put to ferret out the reasons for the foul deed from among the building's strange inhabitants, including a death-obsessed undertaker and an aging photographer. As the suspense builds to the final scenes, the solution to who did it is as unusual as the residents of the building. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

In this uneven take-off on some reluctant resistance fighters in World War II, a family of musicians find themselves the unwilling hosts of a segment of the German High Command when their Paris mansion is taken over by the occupying forces. What happens next is a series of individual skits, cameo appearances, and zany interludes that are not necessarily as strung together as they are strung out. Characters include: Adolph Hitler's melodious half-brother whose singing style is hilariously close to that of Julio Iglesias, a "good" German officer, stereotypical of any of those found in post-World War II movies, and a woman who provides the comedy in a 1970s television talk show when she expounds on what really happened in the Paris villa back when. It is the acting which carries the day for this film, more than the actual script or cinematic development. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The interwoven love stories in Et La Tendresse?... Bordel! No 2 contrast three different ways of being together in modern French life. Carole is the mistress of Francois, a man who not only has a wife and children, but who makes a habit of having sexual liaisons with women besides his mistress and wife. The immaturity and vagueness of Regis and Julie undermines their initially very loving relationship once they get married. Finally, the straightforward friendship between Luc and Eva evolves into a love based on respect and understanding. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This standard erotic thriller set in St. Tropez involves an unusual ménage à trois first there is Claude, a mother approaching 40 who is also approaching a liaison with the second and pivotal figure in the trio; Romain (Bernard Giraudeau), a Don Juan who is not above pimping on occasion and who is also attracted to Claude; and thirdly, the neurotic Chris (Valèrie Kaprisky), Claude's sexually fixated young daughter. As flashbacks show Chris seducing a former lover and symbolism likens her to a jellyfish whose sting can be fatal, the scenario is set for real trouble -- especially since Chris is angered that Romain obviously avoids her and just as obviously will end up as her mother's lover. Sex, hatred, and fear combine to bring the unbalanced relationships to their final resolution. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Playing it strictly by the book all the way, this conventional love story follows the ups and downers in the relationship between a disk jockey (Gerard Lanvin) and the woman he loves (Jennifer Lanvin, the real-life Mrs. Lanvin). She is the artistic director of a major recording studio. After the couple meet, they fall in love and decide that the only way to live is together. Their schedules are different, but that does not cause as much difficulty as their eventual falling out over the classic question of whether or not to have children. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Complex and more cerebral than a wartime action-thriller, this espionage drama focuses on the relationship of two former buddies who were fencing masters before the war and in love with the same woman. Now Delancourt (Bernard Giraudeau) is apparently living a good life managing a gym in a Paris hotel under Nazi control, where he meets his former friend Pierre (Christophe Malavoy), who is on a secret assignment to mislead the Nazis on the date of the Normandie invasion. Pierre, alias Augustin, cannot figure out if Delancourt is a real resistance fighter or if he is a double agent. Circumstances create a larger and larger gap between the former friends while the plot goes through several twists and turns before Pierre's doubts are resolved. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

Bernard Giraudeau is Paul Brandon, an undercover, daredevil cop, and Gerard Lanvin is Stephane Carella, the man Paul has to spring from jail to help in a grand larceny of a crooked Nice casino run by a mob boss -- the intent is to start a gang war and weaken the drug cartels. While Stephane and the undercover Paul are being transported in a police van, handcuffed together, Paul maneuvers a dangerous escape, and Stephane has no choice but to go with him. Braving cliff faces and wild plunges into fast-moving rapids, the two make it to the house of a young widow, Laura (Christiane Jean) where they plan the spectacular heist at the casino. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
