His 13th birthday fast drawing near, an unsuspecting young boy on the verge of a remarkable transformation remains completely unaware that an ancient prophecy is set to be fulfilled with the rising of the red moon. Korean director Shim Hyung-Rae's monster movie D-War begins with a lengthy prologue, in which an antique dealer named Jack (Robert Forster) watches a young patron, Ethan Kendrick (Cody Erens) get zapped with a force emanating from a chest in his shop. Realizing the significance of this event, Jack bequeaths a medal to the boy, and speaks candidly to him of mystical events that transpired a half-millennium earlier. In a bygone era, it seems, giant creatures called Buraki roamed the land, morphing from serpents into dragons and back again, and equipped with a massive army of formidable creatures. An ancient warrior-apprentice saved the life of his beloved from these monstrosities; the warrior's spirit was eventually contained in the aforementioned chest, and it has now filled Ethan. Jack gives Ethan an enchanted red pendant and advises him to see out the contemporary incarnation of the ancient warrior's intended, who can be recognized via a red dragon tattoo on her shoulder. When the woman reaches her 20th birthday, it seems, she and Ethan - joining forces - will be able to reincarnate Imoogi as dragons. That woman is in fact Sarah (Amanda Brooks); she and Ethan do encounter one another, but it isn't long before the Buraki serpent and all of his enormous minions resurface and decide to lay waste to the City of Angels, worming their way through the town as they look for the chosen pair. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

An aspiring musician on the brink of stardom attempts to do battle with his personal demons before they finally get the best of him in an emotional musical drama from filmmaker Rebecca Cook. John Livien (Jason Behr) is a struggling New York City rocker who, along with band-mates Owen (Dominic Monaghan) and Robby (Joshua Leonard) sense that they are onto something big. Though Livien's devoted girlfriend Emi (Sarah Wynter) and hard working manager Brea Ally Sheedy do their best to support the band and provide the volatile singer with a comfortable environment in which to create, the prospect of standing face-to-face with his own worst inner fears may be enough to drive the increasingly unstable Livien to the point of no return. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by E. Annie Proulx becomes this drama from director Lasse Hallström. Kevin Spacey stars as Quoyle, a struggling, emotionally drained newspaper reporter suffering through a wretched marriage with the abusive Petal (Cate Blanchett), a promiscuous wild woman who tries to sell their daughter, Bunny, into adoption before she's killed in a car wreck. Retrieving his daughter, Quoyle sets out for Newfoundland, his ancestral home, with his long-lost Aunt Agnis (Judi Dench). Although he initially finds life on the island to be as forbidding and severe as Agnis herself, Quoyle gets work as a shipping columnist for the local newspaper "The Gammy Bird," owned by eccentric fisherman Jack Buggit (Scott Glenn). Quoyle's work soon finds an appreciative audience and he begins to rebuild his life, dating local single mother Wavey (Julianne Moore), learning some sea craft, discovering his family's dark history, and finally earning some self-respect. Agnis, in the meantime, starts her own successful business and faces a traumatic incident from her childhood involving Quoyle's late father. Two brothers and their father attempt to sort out their issues regarding family and masculinity in the drama Rites Of Passage. A young lawyer, D.J. (Robert Keith), is in a hotel when he spots his father, Del (Dean Stockwell) -- who happens to be with his mistress. D.J. is very upset, and Del suggests they go somewhere else to talk about this matter. They drive to the family's cabin in the mountains, where they discover Campbell (Jason Behr), D.J.'s brother, who has been out of touch with the family for the past two years; Campbell got into a violent arguments with Del regarding Campbell's male lover, and they haven't spoken since. The three sit down to air their differences when a pair of strangers, Frank (James Remar) and Red (Jaimz Woolvett), arrive at the door, claiming to need help with their car. The mood soon turns confrontational between Frank and Del, threatening to erupt into violence at any moment, especially when it becomes clear that Frank and Campbell have met before. A new love and an old friendship are tested in this soap-operatic second-season episode. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) spies Angel (David Boreanaz) speaking with a mysterious and alluring woman. Unaware that the woman is Drusilla (Juliet Landau) -- Buffy did not meet her in the earlier "School Hard" episode of the series -- Buffy becomes jealous and depressed. But when her old best friend and former crush Ford (Jason Behr) transfers to Sunnydale High, she immediately brightens up and begins hanging out with him, ignoring Angel. Ford soon reveals that he knows that Buffy is the Slayer. Angel, suspicious of Ford's intentions and equally jealous, teams up with Willow (Alyson Hannigan) to check him out. They discover that, instead of transferring schools, Ford is actually a member of a vampire-worshipping club. Ford plans to deliver Buffy to Spike (James Marsters) and become a vampire in return -- a preferred outcome to dying of his brain tumor. ~ All Movie Guide
