A man of faith is rewarded for his devotion, only to find his beliefs challenged by his new prosperity in this drama from Turkish filmmaker Özer Kiziltan. Muharrem (Erkan Can) is a man who lives a simple life devoted to God, determined to live by his laws and fully aware of the consequences of incurring his wrath. Muharrem lives in the small house where he was born, he works for the sackmaker who has employed him since he was a boy, he owns only one suit, and has few other worldly possessions. Muharrem's humble faith and desire to serve the Sheik (Meray Ülgen) who leads his house of worship results in his being offered a new job -- overseeing the properties owned by the Sheik's seminaries. Rauf (Güven Kiraç), the Sheik's assistant, tells Muharrem that his lack of greed and guile makes him perfect for the job, and suddenly he's given fine new clothes, an office, a cell phone, and even a car and driver. As Muharrem struggles to adjust to his new circumstances, he also finds his attitudes challenged -- while he once would have allowed a poor family to skip paying rent for a month on good faith, he is now informed that this could put the seminary's scholarship accounts into arrears, and he has to decide if performing needed repairs to the rental homes is worth the money they will cost. As Muharrem's moral and ethical compass is thrown out of adjustment, he also finds himself tormented by impure thoughts, which never troubled him in the past. Takva: A Man's Fear of God received its North American premiere at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Ever since the 1950s, television and the movies have been engaged in an ongoing war for the mind of the average Joe, but this battle for cultural supremacy takes a very different form in this comedy from Turkey. It's 1974, but in a small village in Southern Turkey, the 20th century is only grudgingly acknowledged by most of the residents. The state of the art of entertainment is represented by open-air film screenings hosted by Latif (Cezmi Baskin), a sleazy opportunist with access to a collection of aged motion pictures from Turkey and France. Nazmi (Altan Erkekli), the mayor of the town, bitterly dislikes Latif and boycotts his screenings out of spite -- though he encourages his wife and children to watch the films for free from the rooftop of a nearby building. Nazmi, however, has learned of a new invention that could conceivably put Latif out of business once and for all -- a "picture box" that seemingly pulls images and sounds out of the sky. Television is all but unknown in the village, and Nazmi is the first man in town to own a set, but having a TV and getting a decent picture are two very different matters, and the search for a strong signal eventually leads to a journey up a nearby mountain. Latif, meanwhile, counters the news of the "vision-tele" everyone is talking about by spreading word that the TV is the work of the Devil and a slap in the face of Islamic tradition. Vizontele was written by Yilmaz Erdogan, who also collaborated on the direction with O. Faruk Sorak. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A sequel to Laleli'de Bir Azize, and with the collaboration of practically the same team, Gemide is the story of four sailors who sit around the ship and spend their time smoking pot. Their routine life turns upside down when one of them gets mugged and badly beaten. They catch the thieves and confiscate their money, also capturing their female companion who is a beautiful prostitute and somehow a virgin. A first feature by film-school graduate Serfar Akar, Gemide is a fast-paced action movie despite the fact that it takes place totally in closed space. It garnered the "Best Second Film," "Best Editing," "Best Director" and "Best Actor" awards of the Antalya Film Festival,1998. ~ Gönül Dönmez-Colin, Rovi
