A husband who suspects his wife has been unfaithful is coached in the fine art of murder by some of history's most noted experts in this dark comedy. Oleg (Ignat Akrachkov) is an actor who has noticed his wife's behavior has become a bit odd, and he's slowly become convinced that his wife is cheating on him with a man (Alexander Bashirov) who recently moved into their neighborhood. Oleg becomes obsessed with the affair he's certain his wife is having, and as he tries to decide what he should do about it, he encounters an elderly gentleman (Oleg Basilashvili) who offers to give him some useful advice. The stranger then escorts Oleg to an opulent mansion where a number of history's most notorious poisoners -- among them Nero, Caligula, Cesare Borgia, and Pope Alexander IV -- give Oleg a crash course in the uses of toxic substances for fun and profit. Yady Ili Vsemirnaya Istoriya Otravlyenii was shown in competition at the 2001 Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Mother Maria (Ludmilla Kasatkina) is so very saintly and predictable from the time she leaves her native Russia in 1917, through her establishing a home for Russian immigrants in Paris and joining the French resistance movement that it becomes hard to identify with her actions and decisions - even those made in the concentration camp. The real-life Russian poetess (Elisaveta Jurevna Kuzmina Karavaeva) must have had more depth. Director Sergei Kolosov has similarly not shown the less admirable side of French life during the war. In 1975, Sergei Kolosov worked with Ludmilla Kasatkina in Pomni Imya Svoye, a critically acclaimed war story that set standards this collaboration does not meet. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

The Russian Tiger Girl is set against a colorful circus background. The title character is Lena (Lena Kasatina), daughter of a circus employee. Enjoying a rapport with the troupe's wild animals, Lena soon becomes a top attraction. Sailor Petya Mokin (L. Bykov) wants to take Lena away from the sawdust trail, but she's in love with daredevil motorcyclist Fyodor (Peter Kodochnikov). The romance is resolved in a totally predictable fashion, though the actors are appealing and their performances convincing. Unusual for a Russian picture of the mid-1950s, Tiger Girl contains next to none of the usual Soviet propaganda. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
