A decidedly non-stereotypical gay male couple finds their efforts to keep their personal and professional lives completely separate challenged by the arrival of the gay nephew whose presence threatens to reveal their closely guarded secret in director Laurie Lynd's drama. Eric (Tom Cavanagh) is a former professional hockey player who now works as a broadcaster at a major sports network. Of course, Eric's colleagues have no clue about the outwardly masculine sportscaster's true sexuality, and the same can be said about his longtime partner, Sam (Ben Shenkman), a lawyer. Now, despite successfully keeping their sexuality a secret for some time, happy couple Eric and Sam find their livelihood threatened with the arrival of Sam's nephew Scot (Noah Bernett) -- whose mother has just died and whose responsibility-shirking father is currently out of town. Scot is an expert in the subjects of knitting and show tunes, but when it comes to the topic of sports he just can't be bothered. Eric knows well the terror of having to hide your sexuality away from the masses, though, and now in order to save Scot from the torment of his new classmates -- and perhaps prevent his own secret from being revealed, the knowing uncle does his best to channel the boy's skating talent into a career in hockey. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

The CBC made-for-television biopic Shania: A Life in Eight Albums reconstructs and dramatizes the early life and ascent to stardom of country rocker Shania Twain, one of the most commercially successful recording artists in Canadian history. It tells of Twain's climb from the obscurity of a low-income family during childhood (when she is played by Reva Timbers) to the initial rumblings of musical talent and ambition as a teenager (when she is played by Shenae Grimes). It recreates her thrilling work on The Tommy Hunter Show in Toronto, where she makes her first televised appearance, as well as her pivotal move to Nashville and her tenacious attempts to make it into the country music business, with limited success - until she meets and signs with megaproducer Mutt Lange - the man she will eventually marry. Meredith Henderson portrays the adult Twain; Meagan Follows co-stars as Twain's mother, Sharon, and Eric Schweig plays Jerry, her adoptive father. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Bill Ewing's holiday film Christmas Child concerns Jack (William R. Moses), a reporter who has been having a difficult time getting much joy out of his life. Both his wife (Megan Follows) and his job fail to revive his spirits. While he is working on a story in Dallas, TX, he comes across a photograph that gets his attention. The photograph leads him to Clearwater, TX, where he learns about the town's ornate nativity scene and confronts his past in ways that should help him become a better person. ~ Perry Seibert, All Movie Guide

Based on a true story, the Canadian TV movie The Stork Derby begins with the death of wealthy Toronto lawyer and lifelong bachelor Charles Vance Miller (Frank Fontaine). Going through Miller's effects, his lawyers discover that he intended to divide his fortune among the Canadian women who would deliver the most babies within a decade after his birth. Fueled by the circulation-hungry Toronto Daily Star, "The Great Toronto Stork Derby" held the Dominion in thrall throughout the Depression years, with hundreds and thousands of women hoping to escape the ravages of the Depression via mass procreation. The contest boils down to three front runners: French-Canadian Vivanne Kennelly (Pascale Montpetit), whose anxiousness to win at all costs leads to tragedy; Colleen Brant (Janine Thierault), who has multiple babies by multiple fathers; and Gina Bonaggio (Ellen David), an impoverished Italian immigrant. Dutifully chronicling each twist and turn of the contest is Canada's only female journalist Kate Harrington (Megan Follows), who at first regards the whole affair as demeaning to women, but ultimately becomes an ardent crusader for fair play when, during the 1938 court trial that will determine the winner, it becomes painfully obvious that the Canadian government will succumb to traditional colonial bigotry and see to it that no "inferior" women--that is, non-white non-Protestants--will benefit from Miller's legacy. Suspects include the kid's parents and one of their neighbors, a person with a history of being in close proximity of suspicious blazes. Astonishingly, A.D.A. Martin (William Hurt) and Jack (Timothy Hutton) are World War II soldiers who go from being army buddies to bitter enemies during the war in this uneven melodrama. Not realizing they are brothers-in-law, Martin eventually learns that Jack is married to his sister Josie (Melissa Leo). On their wedding night, Josie's father Jorge (Francisco Rabal) had abducted her in an attempt to dominate her with his old-world ideals of marriage.
