This big-budget science fiction adventure centers on a final battle between good and evil for control of the world. In the year 3000, Earth is ruled by the Psyclos, a vicious alien race of which Terl (John Travolta) is a member, that has laid waste to the planet, killed the majority of the population, and stripped Earth of its valuable resources. Pockets of resistance remain among the surviving humans; Jonnie "Goodboy" Tyler (Barry Pepper) is one such rebel, living in hiding in the mountains near Boulder, CO. Eventually, Johnny begins organizing like-minded humans for a final stand against the Psyclos. The film is based on the novel by L. Ron Hubbard, the science fiction author also known as the founder of the Church of Scientology; it covers only the first half of the book, saving the remainder for a possible sequel. Battlefield Earth also stars Forest Whitaker, Kim Coates, and Kelly Preston. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This made-for-TV fantasy thriller was adapted from the television series The Crow: Stairway to Heaven, which was in turn inspired by the 1994 film The Crow. Eric Draven (Mark Dacascos) is a musician who was thoughtlessly murdered. One year after his death, Draven returns to life as a member of the undead, and with a crow as his spirit guide, he sets out to see justice done against those who would wrong others. Since Draven is not alive, he can absorb whatever punishment his adversaries offer him, and with the help of his friend Sarah (Katie Stuart), this troubled hero makes it his business to vanquish evil and support the forces of good. The home video release of The Crow: Stairway to Heaven features material that was not used in the original television broadcast; the feature-length version contains graphic violence and received an R rating. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) is somewhat startled to learn that his mother, Alcmene (Liddy Holloway), has agreed to marry King Jason (Jeffrey Thomas). Even more startling is Jason's willingness to give up his throne to wed a commoner -- and his choice of successor: Hercules himself, who declines the honor in favor of his mortal half-brother Iphicles (Kevin Smith). Meanwhile, the evil Patronius (Simon Prast), who covets the throne himself, conspires with Hera to sabotage the wedding. The upshot of all this intrigue is the surprise appearance of Perfidia the sea serpent, who puts a damper on the ceremony by swallowing both Hercules and Jason! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This action film concerns Jim Paradine (Miles O'Keeffe), a stressed-out Miami Beach policeman who goes to the mountains to visit his friend Eli (Frank Fontaine), a local cop. While he's there, Paradine runs into the gang of crooks who murdered his family two years before and left him for dead. Peter Colvey and Jason Cavalier are the homicidal brothers, and Lynne Adams is their lesbian sister. The gang swipes a $2 million payroll from mountain loggers and kills a lot of people (including Eli), only to have the vengeful, crossbow-toting Paradine and local sheriff Mantee (Fred Williamson) come after them. A snowmobile flies off a mountain, a man dangling from a cliff is blown up with a grenade, and the film is packed with enough violence and nudity to satisfy genre fans, despite a somewhat lacklustre leading turn by O'Keeffe (Tarzan, the Ape Man). ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi
