Native Canadian actor Ricky Mabe revealed an onscreen flexibility and eclecticism that enabled him to switch between radically different projects with great ease, thus setting him apart from the pack. Mabe began as a child star in youth-oriented Canadian productions such as the 1996 Frankenstein and Me and the 1998 Little Men, but truly hit his stride with a recurring role as Gideon Lustig in the U.S. series Beautiful People, produced by ABC Family but shot in Canada. This Canadian movie about a boy and his dog during the early 1920s is set in the countryside southeast of Montreal. Twelve-year-old Sam MacKenzie (Tod Fennell) is the son of an Arctic explorer who vanished in the tundra. His mother Althea (Bronwen Booth) has remarried, but Sam isn't as close to his stepfather, country doc Asa Robinson (Henry Czerny), as he is to the wolf-like dog Kayla. Sam builds a dog sled to enter a race with Kayla, but he soon is stunned to learn a request was made to have local authorities kill Kayla. Their debts mounting as their bank accounts dry up, longtime friends Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) plot to solve all their financial problems by making an adult film with movie geek appeal. Zack is a barista who doesn't make big tips, and Miri isn't exactly making top dollar either. Friends since grade school, they share a cramped apartment together, but the bills are piling up faster than their paychecks. Then, at their class reunion, the two friends meet up with a former classmate who's shot to success in the adult film industry. Inspired after a YouTube video of Miri in her granny panties goes viral, Zack and his roommate round up a crew and begin production on their masterpiece. Canadian director Rodney Gibbons helmed this adaptation of the 1871 Louisa May Alcott classic, previously filmed in 1935 and 1940. Alcott followed Little Women (1868) and Little Men with a third book in the series, Jo's Boys (1866). This 1998 family film was evidently prompted by Gillian Armstrong's successful 1994 Little Women adaptation with its potent cast (Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Claire Danes, Kirsten Dunst, Samantha Mathis, Christian Bale, Gabriel Byrne, Eric Stoltz, Mary Wickes, John Neville) and impressive production values. In Little Men, urban urchins Nat (Michael Caloz) and cocky Dan (Ben Cook) usually find trouble just around the corner. About to be nabbed for theft, Nat gets lucky after a kindhearted benefactor intervenes. While Dan continues to survive on the streets, Nat arrives at peaceful Plumfield -- the school managed by Jo (Mariel Hemingway) and Fritz Bhaer (Chris Sarandon) -- where he reforms and finds a new way of life. But then Dan arrives at Plumfield, the Bhaers take him in, and the tranquility is shattered. Dan has an immediate influence on life at the school after he introduces such activities as drinking, poker, and fights. Although Fritz objects, Jo decides to give Dan a chance. Set in a tiny Mojave desert town, this Canadian children's tale centers on Earl Williams, a 12-year-old boy obsessed with the notion of bringing back Frankenstein from the dead. Earl loves horror and frequently draws chilling pictures in class, something that gets him in trouble with his super-strict teacher Mrs. Perdue. Earl's father is a failed Hollywood actor and much of the boy's dreaminess comes from him. Earl gets a chance to enact his dream on Halloween night just after the police bring him and his buddy back home after catching them trying to sneak in to the drive-in to watch Night of the Living Dead. As soon as they can, the boys sneak out to a traveling carnival where they try to break into the House of Mysteries to investigate the "actual authentic Frankenstein's Monster" said to reside within. The next day the carnival heads to a new town, but as one truck pulls away, the monster falls out and is left in the road. Earl finds it and spends the rest of the picture trying to bring it back to life. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
