Seven inner-linking monologues highlight the growing chasm between environmentalists and those who make their living from the land in director Mark Leiren-Young's poignant look at an ongoing conflict. Who loves trees more, the logger or the protestor? Dylan and Ben both love trees, but while Dylan proves his dedication by living on a small platform high above the forest floor, Ben would prefer to chop down Dylan's tree and build a home for a family. Who's to say whose position is more valid? Actors Tricia Helfer, Tahmoh Penikett, Brendan Fletcher, Babz Chula, Jillian Fargey, and Scott McNeil all lend their talents to a project that proves protecting our environment is never as easy as black and white. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

In a Vancouver neighborhood where the middle class share the streets with small-time criminals, prostitutes, and drug-dealers, the lives of three radically different couples interconnect in ways which can only be defined by looking at the big picture. Shortly after Doug (Ben Ratner) and Sarah (Camille Sullivan) move into their Mount Pleasant home with their six-year old daughter, the curious youngster pricks herself with a used hypodermic needle found in the backyard. Meanwhile, four blocks away, heroic-addicted teenage prostitute Nadia (Katie Boland) shares a ramshackle house with her drug dealing boyfriend and pimp Nick (Tygh Runyan). One of Nadia's best customers is affluent john Stephen Burrows (Shawn Doyle, whose high-class wife Anne (Kelly Rowan) works as a full time social coordinator and thirteen year-old daughter is maturing so fast that her preoccupied mother and father barely have time to notice. Their lives on an unexpected collision course, these Mount Pleasant residents are all about to find out that just how drastically their lives can be affected by people they would never even known existed if not for the intervention of fate. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A social worker's struggle with a difficult case provides the centerpiece of this Canadian drama. Jane (Nancy Sivak) is bogged down from her work with a drug-addicted mother (Jillian Fargey), the woman's abusive husband (William MacDonald), and the couple's two children. Neither the woman nor her husband want their children put into foster care, and eventually Jane has to call in the police to handle the situation. Her work with the couple is contrasted with Jane's personal life, glimpsed through a long tête-à-tête with her lover (Hiro Kanagawa). ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

Close to Home is a movie about making a movie. A documentary filmmaker sets out to produce a study of juvenile prostitution in Vancouver. His "star" is young Jillian Fargey, who makes several efforts to escape her sordid street life, but is always compelled to return to solicitation by an unbearable home environment. Another of the documentary's subjects is Daniel Allman, a "been there, done that" veteran of prostitution who ends up at the wrong end of a knife. The free-flowing script was written by the film's producer Harvey Crosland and director Rick Beairsto. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
