Four-and-a-half years after the searing and surprising events that marked their final days at Tree Hill High, old friends return to their North Carolina hometown. Some of them reached the goals they set as teens: Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) published his novel; Brooke (Sophia Bush) rocked the fashion world as an acclaimed couturiere; and Haley (Bethany Joy Galeotti) became the teacher she always yearned to be. Some didn't: Peyton (Hilarie Burton) crashed and burned in L.A., and Nathan (James Lafferty) saw his promise of pro hoops glory evaporate in a single, violent moment. But once they're back home, everyone discovers so much is the same: love, friendship, challenges, triumphs, laughs, tears...and dreams. The familiar Cinderella concept gets a sun-splashed makeover in Death to the Supermodels director Joel Silverman's wave-riding teen comedy. The misfits of Laguna Beach high school have suffered more abuse than they're willing to take at the hands of in-crowd bully Tyler Masters (Ryan Carnes), and as the senior trip draws ever closer their hunger to seek revenge for years of humiliation grows too powerful to resist. Enter newly arrived high school student Jordan (Corey Sevier), a former east-coaster who seems to be having a hard time fitting in at Laguna Beach. When Jordan learns that the highlight of the senior year is the annual surfing contest in Costa Rica, he soon hatches a plan that will give the downtrodden outcasts a much-needed ego boost while simultaneously serving Tyler with a well-deserved comeuppance. In order to do it right, though, Jordan will have to convince outcast hip-hopper Mo (Sisqo), morose Doris (Laura Bell Bundy), skate-punk Taz (Miko Hughes), and virginal Larry (Lee Norris) to break for Costa Rica a week early and train for the competition under the tutelage of loopy former surf pro Rip (Harland Williams). Goldie Hawn garnered favorable reviews with her TV-movie directorial debut, a family drama set against the backdrop of racism in the American South of the early '60s. While in 1962 the Cuban Missile Crisis generates fears among adults, 12-year-old Lilly Kate Burns (Jena Malone) dreams of a career as a dancer. The problem is how to escape her dreary small-town existence, where she's surrounded by her mother (Mary Ellen Trainor), a stroke victim; her bigoted Uncle Ray (J.T. Walsh), a theater owner; her dejected Aunt Emma (Christine Lahti); and her alcoholic dance teacher Muriel (Catherine O'Hara). In addition to young Billy (Lee Norris), Lilly is also friends with black minister Jediah Walker (Jeffrey D. Sams). Uncle Ray has provided only a single exit in his theater, and when a young black boy dies in a theater fire, the tragedy sparks and inflames local racial conflicts. Series protagonist Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) is all of 11 years old as Boy Meets World launches its first season, but even at that tender age he has drawn up what he considers a definitive list of friends and enemies. In the "friends" column are his best friends, Topanga (Danielle Fishel), Shawn (Rider Strong), and Stuart (Lee Norris) -- whose last name changes from Lempke to Minkus early on because of a legal entanglement. Looming large in the "enemies" column is Cory's least favorite teacher, the highly demanding and unpredictable George Feeny (William Daniels) -- and worse still, Mr. Feeny lives right next door to Cory's family! A few facts about season one of Boy Meets World: the character of Nicholas (Chauncey Leopoldi) was supposed to have been a regular as one of Cory's school pals, but the part was minimized as the season rolled on; conversely, Topanga Lawrence, introduced in the fourth episode ("Cory's Alternative Friends") was intended to be a minor character, but her status was suddenly elevated after she and Cory shared their first on-screen kiss! A handful of other characters make their first-and-only Boy Meets World appearances during the series' freshman season: "Grandma Was a Rolling Stone" features Rue McClanahan as Cory's grandmother Bernice and a very young Keri Russell as Feeny's niece Jessica; and "She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not" marks the only apperance of Topanga's sister Nebula (Krystee Clark). ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
