To most people, the mere mention of professional wrestling conjures up images of ridiculously large men in silly costumes beating the life out of one another, but in this documentary viewers are invited to witness the feminine side of sports entertainment. Back in the so-called Golden Era of wrestling, fans would have likely scoffed at the idea of female fighters. Then in the 1940s, audience expectations were turned upside down when Moolah and Young came along to prove that females can crack skulls just as much ferocity as their male counterparts. It was Moolah and Young who paved the groundwork for such brawling babes as former Playboy model April Hunter, and WWE superstar Joanie Laurer (aka Chyna). From the WWE to the WCW, ECW, and even TNA, this lively look at the world of female wrestling speaks with over a dozen lethal ladies in order to explore all the temptations and politics that go along with being the "fairer sex" in what has historically been a male dominated industry. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A handful of pioneering women wrestlers look back at the wild and wooly days before "sports entertainment" was a multi-million-dollar business and female grapplers were regarded as a novelty (or worse, a freak show) in this documentary. Lipstick & Dynamite examines the history of women on the professional wrestling circuit (dating back to 1939) and focuses on eight female fighters, two of whom -- The Fabulous Moolah and The Great Mae Young -- are still involved in the fight game. Offering a perspective on the darker side of the wrestling circuit, including fixed matches, male promoters eager to take advantage of naïve female newcomers, and the poor treatment and pay often afforded female contestants, the film also examines the lighter side of the business and what some of the greats of women's wrestling have done after leaving the ring. Lipstick & Dynamite was shown in competition at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
