Chosen to close the Director's Fortnight section of the 2003 Cannes Film Festival, director Jean-François Pouliot's comedy chronicles the chaos wreaked when a small, down-on-its-luck town is seduced by the promise of having a big-time manufacturing plant -- on one unique condition. It seems that the company isn't willing to move to the isolated, Quebec-countryside burgh unless the mayor (Raymond Bouchard) and townsfolk can procure a doctor for them. Salvation arrives in the form of Lewis (David Boutin), a mild-mannered man from Montreal whom the townspeople begin to try to impress, persuade, or otherwise cajole into taking the job. This silly Canadian action film concerns a cop named Robby (Michael Paré) hired by a mysterious woman, Sela (Caroline Neron), to find her missing sister. Not only does Sela have two different-colored eyes, but she may have actually once been the brother of the missing Billy (Lucie Laurier), who is now working in seedy gang-owned strip clubs. Robby has his own problems, too -- involving his no-good brother, who had his thumb cut off by a Chinese gangster and walks around with it in a box while complicating Robby's life. Throw in a slumming Pam Grier as Robby's lusty lesbian partner; Maury Chaykin in a hilarious bit part as a drooling voyeur; and Paré turning in what must be his worst performance ever as the clueless cop -- and the resultant mess is a rare treat for fans of bad cinema. Police detective Jacques Laniel's life becomes a nightmare the day drive-by shootists gun down his partner Thomas Colin. His colleagues make matters worse by blaming him for the death, and after his wife leaves him, Laniel decides to quit the force and launch a private investigation into Colin's murder. Soon afterward, Laniel finds the bullet-riddled body of famed author and literature professor Zachary Osborne tied to his car hood. The professor's wife hires Laniel to solve the murder, but what the detective finds is ugly: Osborne was a part of a lucrative land-speculation deal that involved the sale of a crumbling old rectory that had been turned into a halfway house called the Haven of the Monsters. The name is apt, for all the residents are convicted killers who were given inordinately light sentences. Up to this point in the plot, the film has been a standard crime thriller. But when Lanier starts questioning the Haven's tenants and their crimes are revealed via flashback, it takes on the character of a David Lynch production. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

As they get to know each other, Thomas decides to make a docudrama of her life. As the project progresses, Thomas finds himself falling deeply in love with Winnie.
