Director Wim Wenders and writer Sam Shepard, who collaborated on the award-winning film Paris, Texas, once again join forces for this dark drama of a man trying to turn over a new leaf late in life. Howard Spence (Sam Shepard) is a veteran actor who has been a popular Western star since the mid-'70s. Spence's onscreen image as a strong, principled lawman is a severe contrast to his life off the set, which has been dominated by drinking, drugs, and promiscuous womanizing. However, Spence has begun to find his hedonistic life a shallow existence, and one day, in the midst of filming his latest movie, he simply hops on his horse and rides away, eventually making his way to the small Nevada town where his mother lives. Mother (Eva Marie Saint) has little interest in seeing her wayward son after so many years, but she does share a recently discovered bit of information with him -- one of Spence's former girlfriends stopped by with word that she had given birth to his son years before. Spence borrows his father's old car and drives to Butte, MT, where he finds Doreen (Jessica Lange), the woman who was his lover years ago. Doreen runs a tavern where her son, Earl (Gabriel Mann), plays for the locals with his rock band; Spence is in fact Earl's father, but the young man has no interest in meeting his biological father, and shuts out Spence as the actor tries to get to know him. As Spence struggles to find some sort of familial connection in Butte, he makes friends with a young woman named Sky (Sarah Polley), only to discover she was also fathered by him during his rowdy younger days. Christian Otjen's small-town drama Reeseville begins with David Meyer (Brad Hunt) returning to the title town for the first time in many years. That same morning, his father is found hanged to death in the family house. The local coroner (Mark Hamill) suspects that the death was not a suicide, and the case is taken up by policeman (Brian Wimmer), who begins to question David even more strongly after David flirts with both the officer's sister and his girlfriend. A couple drifts into crime for a few laughs and some fast money, but before long they discover they've gotten in too deep. Georgia (Money Mazur) is a beautiful but unstable woman who claims to be under eighteen and still living at home, though it's hard to say if she's telling the truth. One night, while drinking with friends, she meets Paul (Carmine Giovinazzo), a janitor who intervenes when a drunk propositioning Georgia doesn't seem willing to take no for an answer. Paul and Georgia are both looking for kicks, but not in the usual manner; for fun and profit, Georgia teases men until they make their move, then turns her emotions 180 degrees and screams for help. Paul then comes into the picture, pretending to be the Knight In Shining Armor, and roughs the men up; he takes their wallets in the process, and Paul and Georgia split the money. This small-time con works well enough but gets old before long, and the pair plans a more elaborate scam involving an auto accident. Their target turns out to be a music business executive, Marshal (Vincent Ventresca), who sees through them almost immediately. He can tell, however, that they have a way with a con, and he hires them to work for his record label. Before long, drugs and booze are taking their toll on Paul, while Georgia balks at a blackmail scheme involving city officials who have blocked a building project Marshal is backing. Several of the biggest teen horror hits of the 1990s get slashed in this satiric comedy. Hagitha Utslay (Tiffani Amber Thiessen) is a television reporter with Empty-V News who is covering a series of murders that have the students of Bulimia Falls High School quaking in their boots. The school's principal (Coolio) knows something must be done and decides to hire a top security force to protect the student body; unfortunately, he has to settle for Doughy (Tom Arnold), an inept rent-a-cop who recently lost his job patrolling a shopping mall. Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th also features Shirley Jones, Simon Rex, Majandra Delfino, and Jimmie Walker; the film was directed by John Blanchard, who previously helmed episodes of the television series The Kids in the Hall and SCTV. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
