Susanna Foster Movies

Born and raised in the Midwest, actress Susanna Foster headed for the bright lights of Hollywood in 1936 when she was only 12 years old. There, MGM saw potential in the preteen and sent her to the same acting school where stars like Mickey Rooney had studied. Within a few years, Foster embarked upon a professional film career and signed with MGM, Paramount, and Universal over the subsequent decade. One of her more notable roles came in 1943 when she played Christine in a film version of The Phantom of the Opera, and a number of other roles followed. She then explored a real career in opera, touring postwar Europe with soprano Dusolina Giannini and starring in the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera's production of Naughty Marietta, as well as a number of other operettas and musicals.
Sadly, Foster would fall on harder times in subsequent decades, suffering from alcoholism and mental illness, and losing custody of her two sons to her sometime husband. In later years, she would become a regular fixture at Phantom of the Opera fan events, posing for photos and signing autographs. Foster died in 2009, at the age of 84. ~ Cammila Collar, Rovi

The original movie on which this independently filmed remake is based was something of an accident. Though it evidently lacked a well-made script or a decent budget and shooting schedule, the nightmarish mood that the 1946 original created propelled it to cult status, and it served as a model for several film movements, including nouvelle vague. The present version is something of an oddity, as it stars the son (Tom Neal, Jr.) of the ill-fated man who had the leading role in the original movie in the exact same role. The story of the remake deviates from the original in only one minor respect, but the magic which made the original movie compelling despite its flaws is reportedly missing in this one. In the story, a hitchhiker (Neal) accepts a ride with a man who keels over dead. Rather than chance being accused of his death, the rider takes over the man's clothes and identification and continues on with his journey after disposing of the body. When he picks up a woman rider, he is appalled to hear her say "What did you do with the body?" She was an earlier rider in the same car and knows him for an imposter. He falls prey to her blackmail scheme until something even more incredible happens, and the shifty hitchhiker seems to have landed in a nightmare world from which there is no escape. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

In this musical comedy, a young singer becomes so desperate to appear on Broadway that she goes to a prominent producer and tells him that she is the daughter who resulted from his day-long marriage to a young woman he knew years ago. The producer is delighted and soon puts his daughter up on stage. The trouble begins when the girl's "mother" suddenly pays a call. For her own reasons, the woman decides to play along with the girl's ruse. Fortunately, by the story's end, the truth is revealed, all differences are reconciled and happiness ensues. When the older gent goes to New York, she follows as does her younger suitor. While in the Big Apple, the soldier encounters the older man's ex-wife who is still in love with him. This Technicolor retelling of the Gaston Leroux "grand guignol" classic The Phantom of the Opera has a little more opera than phantom, but that's because the stars are soprano Susannah Foster and tenor Nelson Eddy. Claude Rains carries the acting honors on his shoulders, playing a pathetic orchestra violinist who worships aspiring opera-singer Foster from afar. The girl is unaware that Rains has secretly been financing her music lessons with instructor Leo Carrillo. When he runs out of money, Rains attempts to sell the concerto that he's been working on all his life. Mistakenly believing that his precious concerto has been stolen from him, Rains attacks and kills the music publisher he holds responsible. Terrified, the publisher's mistress throws a pan full of acid into Rains' face. Rains runs screaming into the night, and is not heard from for the next reel or so. Soon afterward, the Paris Opera house is plagued by a series of mysterious accidents. The managers are informed via letter that the "accidents" will continue if Foster is not immediately promoted to leading roles. Only after reigning diva Jane Farrar is drugged into incapacitation is Foster given her big break. Farrar accuses Foster's boyfriend, police inspector Nelson Eddy, of doping her in order to advance Foster's career. Farrar is later strangled, and Eddy is accused of the crime. The culprit is, of course, Rains, who now poses as the masked-and-caped "phantom". Maniacally determined that no one will impede Foster's success, Rains causes a huge chandelier to crash down on the opera audience when Foster fails to appear onstage (she'd been kept from performing by police-chief Edgar Barrier, who hoped in this manner to flush The Phantom out of hiding). A chase through the catacombs below the opera house ensues, with Rains holding Foster prisoner. When Rains briefly lets down his guard, the tremulous Foster removes his mask. It's "yecccch," all right, but nowhere near as frightening as the unmasking scene in the silent Lon Chaney version of Phantom of the Opera. The same can be said for the rest of this 1943 remake, though in fairness it appears as though the film wasn't really designed to scare anyone, but instead to serve as a suspense yarn with musical interludes. Hume Cronyn makes his second film appearance in Phantom in a microscopic role. The huge sets designed for this picture were hastily reused for the 1944 Universal melodrama The Climax, starring Boris Karloff and (again) Susannah Foster. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The illustrious National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan provides the backdrop for this musical that chronicles the ups and downs of overseeing such an establishment. The story centers on a young burlesque singer who is discovered and taken to the camp. At first the uncultured girl rebels against the many rules of the camp, but eventually she settles down and sets to work. Trouble for the camp ensues when a negative newspaper article is published and the backers for the camp withdraw their support. To save the place, the young singer stages a benefit performance. He gets back into the movie business when he overhears a conversation between producers discussing their newest prodigy. Cooper butts in and suggests the producers remake Skippy (a real-life 1931 film that made young Cooper a star). The bigwigs like the idea and then hire Cooper to become the boy's acting coach. In his last film assignment, portly Walter Connolly fills the title role (in more ways than one) in The Great Victor Herbert. Very little of Herbert's life story is incorporated in the screenplay (a closing title actually apologizes for the film's paucity of cold hard facts); instead, the writers allow the famed composer's works to speak for themselves. In the tradition of one of his own operettas, Herbert spends most of his time patching up the shaky marriage between tenor John Ramsey (Allan Jones) and Louise Hall (Mary Martin). Many of Herbert's most famous compositions are well in evidence, including "Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life", "March of the Toys" and "Kiss Me Again", the latter performed con brio by teenaged coloratura Susanna Foster. Evidently, the producers were able to secure the film rights for the Herbert songs, but not for the stage productions in which they appeared, which may explain such bizarre interpolations as having a song from Naughty Marietta, which takes place in New Orleans, performed before a wintry Alpine backdrop! ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
