Marwan (Arnold Vosloo) has escaped, and CTU discovers that he was working for McLennan-Forster, a big defense contractor, under an assumed name. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) heads to their offices to find out more. When Paul (James Frain) finds out about the connection, he offers to go with Jack, because he installed the defense firm's security software. At the firm, McLennan (Bill Smitrovich) and his underlings Conlon (Tomas Arana) and Reiss (Albie Selznick) pretend to cooperate, while they're secretly working furiously to destroy their incriminating files before Jack and Paul can uncover them. Because of Paul's expertise at retrieving their data, the crooked businessmen decide to take more drastic measures before it's too late. While the company charges an electromagnetic pulse to destroy all their hardware, Jack investigates the electrical disturbance, leaving Paul to print out a critical encoded file before the device goes off. At CTU, Driscoll (Alberta Watson), shaken by her daughter's suicide, is forced to step down from command. Heller (William Devane) appoints Tony (Carlos Bernard) interim director of CTU Los Angeles, but he also asks Division to send in a replacement as soon as possible. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

At the Araz home, Dina (Shohreh Aghdashloo) is putting on a show, being nice to Debbie (Leighton Meester), while secretly ordering Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) to murder the girl. He tries to get Debbie to leave, but it's too late. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) is posing as an armed robber in order to delay Kalil (Anil Kumar) long enough for Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) to get him the satellite imagery Jack needs to keep tailing the terrorist. Jack takes several people hostage in the convenience store, taking all of their cell phones and wallets, and before long, the police arrive. Chloe's being hampered by Driscoll (Alberta Watson), who suspects that she's in contact with Jack, and assigns Sarah (Lana Parrilla) to spy on her. Chloe in turn persuades Edgar (Louis Lombardi) to take over the satellite work she's doing for Jack. Driscoll has her own personal problems to deal with, as she learns that her schizophrenic daughter, Maya (Angela Goethals), has been acting up, and her neighbor has called the police. Driscoll intervenes, again with Sarah's help, and has Maya brought to CTU. Eventually, Chloe and Edgar get the satellite coverage, and Jack takes Kalil out of the store at gunpoint, using the terrorist's car to make his escape, and then letting Kalil go while he's being monitored via satellite from CTU. Driscoll is now aware of Jack's activities, and tells Jack that she's going to pick Kalil up, but then CTU intercepts a phone call from Kalil to Omar (Tony Plana) indicating that Jack was right about Kalil's destination. Edgar (Louis Lombardi) has successfully regained control of all but six of the nuclear reactors. The only way to stop those six from melting down is to find the override device. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) calls Heller (William Devane) to warn him about the mole inside CTU. They come up with a plan to root out the traitor, but Marianne (Aisha Tyler) successfully diverts suspicion away from herself, and the wrong person is accused of being a spy and is tortured, under Driscoll's (Alberta Watson) supervision, for information. Tony (Carlos Bernard), now unemployed and separated from his wife, takes Jack and Audrey (Kim Raver) to his place, where they view the video Jack got from the security firm, and Audrey recognizes the man she saw at the compound. Jack gets help from CTU D.C. in identifying the man as Henry Powell (Robertson Dean), a former employee of McLennan-Forster, the defense contractor that developed the override device. Jack also learns that Powell has booked a helicopter flight out of town. Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout) brings Dina (Shohreh Aghdashloo) to a hospital, where a doctor (Hector Luis Bustamante) recognizes that she has a gunshot wound, and notifies the police, forcing the mother and son to flee. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

Season four of the wildly successful "real-time" adventure series 24 begins some 18 months at the end of season three. John Keeler (Geoff Pierson) has succeeded David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) as president of the United States, and the new secretary of defense is James Heller (William Devane) -- who is also the new boss of crack CTU agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). One of Heller's first moves is to reunite Jack with his old nemesis Erin Driscoll (Alberta Watson), now the head of the CTU. Unbeknownst to most of the principal characters, Jack is in love with Heller's daughter (and policy assistant), Audrey Raines (Kim Raver), this despite the fact that Audrey is still legally married to estranged husband, Paul (James Frain). Outside of Jack Bauer and President Keeler, the only series character from season three to return as a regular in season four is CTU tech analyst Chloe O'Brien (Mary Lynn Rajskub); the rest of the cast is virtually brand-new. The "day" that comprises the fourth season begins, typically, with a nail-biting crisis, when James Heller and his daughter Audrey are captured by a terrorist group headed by Habib Marwan (Arnold Vosloo), who has already set a fiendish master plan in motion with a train bombing in the U.S. It soon develops that the abduction of Heller and Audrey is but a subterfuge to allow an enemy stealth bomber to blow up Air Force One and eliminate the president -- and ultimately to gain control of a nuclear warhead that will destroy a major U.S. city. Making matters worse, there is a turncoat in the ranks of the CTU -- and without giving the game away, it can be noted that CTU agent Sarah Gavin (Lana Parrilla) tumbles to the mole's identity before Jack Bauer does. As the tension mounts, Paul Raines is seriously wounded saving Jack during a covert mission, which "ices" Jack's relationship with Audrey; a shattering personal tragedy forces Erin Driscoll to resign from her post in mid-season; there is dissension in the terrorist ranks during a concerted effort to trigger nuclear meltdowns in six different cities; the seldom-used 25th Amendment is invoked to change presidents in midstream; and an old enemy of Jack's from the series' first two seasons appears virtually out of nowhere to make a terrible situation far worse than could ever be imagined. Clearly, the fourth season of 24 drew inspiration from the headlines of the day, notably the controversial treatment of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. The series also was attacked by certain special-interest groups for making several of the villains Arabs, or of Arab descent. And of course, there were those who carped that the series' notion of "real time" (each episode consisted of a single uninterrupted hour in the same day) resulted in some rather ludicrous lapses of logic. But 24 was as big a hit in the ratings throughout its fourth season as it had been all along. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Following Mike's (Jude Ciccolella) advice, Logan (Gregory Itzin) asks David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) to join him in the command center and essentially manage the crisis for him. Using her connections, Audrey (Kim Raver) arranges to have Paul (James Frain) flown to a proper hospital in the morning, despite the ban on air travel. But Paul's condition takes a sudden turn for the worse, requiring emergency surgery. Edgar (Louis Lombardi) is able to restore some of Marwan's (Arnold Vosloo) videotaped message, which indicates that his nuclear attack will take place before dawn. Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) learns that Tony (Carlos Bernard) has been living with another woman when Jen (Roxanne Day) calls CTU to speak to him. Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) unlocks the hard drive of the computer she obtained in the last episode, and finds a connection between Marwan and Lee Jong (Peter Chen), a nuclear weapons expert. (Concerned over her lack of emotion after her violent heroics, she tells Edgar, "I hope I'm not some kind of psychopath.") Lee is a Chinese national, and CTU soon learns that he's taken refuge at the Chinese consulate. Palmer attempts diplomacy, contacting the consul, Koo Yin (François Chau), and asking for permission to interrogate Lee, but Koo is unable to give Palmer a speedy reply, and with the clock ticking, Palmer tells Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) to prepare to do whatever's necessary. Sure enough, Jack commands a secret raid on the consulate (considered Chinese soil) to kidnap Lee, but things go terribly wrong. Koo is accidentally shot by consulate guards, and Lee is also shot and critically wounded. Jack's team races to CTU to save Lee's life so that he can be questioned. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

While the people of the Counter Terrorist Unit watched helplessly, Marwan's (Arnold Vosloo) nuclear missile was launched from somewhere in the Midwest, most likely headed toward a major city on one of the coasts, leaving CTU about three hours, coincidentally, to somehow stop it from reaching its target. Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) has no luck trying to engage the captured Marwan in some sort of negotiation. "I'm getting what I want," he tells Jack. Edgar (Louis Lombardi) notices that Marwan received a call from Richard Heller (Logan Marshall-Green), of all people, about a week ago, and Richard is brought in for questioning again. Tony (Carlos Bernard) ruefully notes of Jack and Audrey that while they seemed like a fun couple yesterday, Jack has since been responsible for her husband's death and now may have to torture her brother. Audrey begs Jack to let her talk to Richard for five minutes before Jack begins his hardball tactics. When Richard won't talk to her, Heller (William Devane) shows up, and gets the young man to acknowledge that an unsavory couple may have had access to his cell phone during the time in question. CTU manages to get an address for the couple, and Jack takes a team there. Before leaving with Jack, Tony has an emotional discussion with Michelle (Reiko Aylesworth) about their future together. At the apartment complex, CTU encounters a familiar and very dangerous foe. Meanwhile, somewhere deep under the White House, Logan (Gregory Itzin) and Palmer (Dennis Haysbert) engage in a political power struggle with Don Ashton (Denis Arndt), the overly ambitious Speaker of the House. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

As the fourth-season finale opens, Mandy (Mia Kirshner) has been offered complete immunity in exchange for revealing Marwan's (Arnold Vosloo) location. While Jack (Kiefer Sutherland) waits for the deal to be signed by Logan (Gregory Itzin) and sent over, Aaron Pierce (Glenn Morshower) reveals that Mandy was involved in an earlier attempt (season two) on Palmer's (Dennis Haysbert) life. But Palmer tells Logan to go ahead and sign her pardon, and she, in turn, reveals the location of her planned rendezvous with Marwan in downtown Los Angeles. While Jack races to capture Marwan alive in order to find and destroy the missile, Logan gets a call from Su Ming (Ping Wu) at the Chinese consulate, who tells him that they know Jack led the assault and kidnapping earlier. The Chinese demand that Jack be turned over to them to face "justice." As the CTU team faces down the nuclear threat, Logan and Cummings (John Allen Nelson) devise a dastardly plan to make sure that Jack doesn't implicate the U.S. government when he's turned over to the Chinese. ~ Josh Ralske, All Movie Guide

As the fourth season of 24 begins, terrorists blow up a train, and steal a mysterious briefcase from a passenger onboard. At CTU, Erin Driscoll (Alberta Watson) is running things, and she has fired Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) over his heroin addiction. Jack is now working for Secretary of Defense James Heller (William Devane) and is romantically involved with Heller's daughter and aide, Audrey (Kim Raver). Jack wants to tell Heller about their relationship, but Audrey is hesitant because she is still legally married to her estranged husband. Word reaches CTU of the train bombing, and Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub) notices that one Tomas Sherek (Faran Tahir), on their terrorist watch list, was recently spotted in L.A. Andrew Paige (Lukas Haas), a hacker, discovers some nodes indicating that someone is plotting a massive corruption of the Internet. He calls his old classmate, Chloe, who sees a possible connection to the terrorist attack, but Driscoll insists that Chloe focus on the bombing and on finding Sherek, ordering Chloe to pass Andrew's concerns along to the FBI. Andrew returns to his office to find that his discovery has not gone unnoticed, and his life is in danger. Jack arrives at CTU on budgetary business in time to help his replacement in the field, Ronnie Lobell (Shawn Doyle), apprehend Sherek. Jack realizes that a terrorist of Sherek's stature would not risk exposure over the bombing. Meanwhile, Audrey accompanies Heller as he visits his rebellious son, Richard (Logan Marshall-Green), and they argue over Richard's plans to denounce his father at an upcoming protest. A suburban couple, Navi (Nestor Serrano) and Dina Araz (Shohreh Aghdashloo), and their teenage son, Behrooz (Jonathan Ahdout), have a connection to the terrorist plot. If one didn't know better, one might suspect that the weekly, 60-minute PAX Network series Just Cause was really the theatrical feature Erin Brockovich with different clothes and characters. Richard Thomas headed the cast as celebrated civil attorney Hamilton Whitney III, who maintained a suite of posh offices in San Francisco. Whitney's sense of serenity and decorum was shattered when he hired feisty single mom Alex DeMonaco (Elizabeth Lackey) as a paralegal. Having been thrown into prison because of her ex-husband's financial shenanigans, Alex managed to get a law degree via the internet, but her trumped-up felony conviction prevented her from practicing law on her own. Thus she latched onto the uptight Whitney, and together these two wildly divergent crusaders set about to right all manner of wrongs and to tilt at the windmills of corporate greed and political corruption. Along the way, Alex endeavored to fully clear her name so that she could reclaim custody of her beloved daughter Mia. Just Cause debuted September 15, 2002. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
