With an earnest narrative that suggests a lighter version of such man-against-the-system efforts as Erin Brockovich and A Civil Action, Jose Antonio Quieros's drama Cenizas del cielo (Ashes from the Sky) stars Celso Bugallo as Federico, a gentleman who has spent the better part of thirty years living in a quaint, lyrical valley all but ruined by the presence of one element - the local nuclear power plant. After three decades of protesting the plant's presence in vain, he receives word of the Kyoto Agreement, a new law that may just play an instrumental role in closing the plant down. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

With his English-language political thriller The Feast of the Goat, action helmer Luis Llosa cinematizes Mario Vargas Llosa's sweeping, epic novel about the myriad of events leading up to the assassination of a real-life tyrannical despot. The story opens in 1992, when a Dominican émigré attorney, Urania Cabral (Isabella Rossellini) leaves her new home in the U.S. and heads back to her native country, for the first occasion in decades. She intends to confront her father, 80-year-old Augustin (Tomas Milian), about his former employment in the government of the supremely corrupt dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo (Tomas Milian). The film then flashes back to the events surrounding the assassination of Trujillo on a highway in late May of 1961, by delving into the lives and motives of each of the participants - from Amadito (Juan Diego Botto), whom Trujillo forced to execute his future brother-in-law, to that victim's father (Murphy Guyer), to Antonio (David Zayas), the brother of an incriminating witness whom Trujillo's men executed. One by one, as their stories are disinterred, the assassins gather on a nighttime road, brandishing guns, and prepare to shoot Trujillo and throw his body into the trunk of a car. Paul Freeman, Stephanie Leonidas and Richard Bekins co-star; Llosa co-authored the script with Augusto Cabada and Zachary Sklar. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Two adults look back to their youth and discover how a seemingly minor incident shaped their lives in this drama from Spain. Lucia (Silvia Munt) is a woman in her early forties who moves back to the neighborhood where she grew up, taking over a house her grandparents once owned. To her surprise, she discovers that Juan (Gary Piquer), whom she knew as a teenager, is living across the street in the home where his grandparents once lived, and seeing one another brings back memories of their youth. In 1974, young Juan (Andres Gertudix) and Lucia (Cristina Brondo) are growing up in Madrid as Franco's regime is coming to a close. Juan, from a poor family, is infatuated with Lucia, and when he helps nurse an injured dog back to health, she starts to take an interest in him, though she already has a boyfriend, the wealthy Nacho (Eloy Azorin). Juan asks Lucia to attend a concert with him by Catalan vocalist Joan Manuel Serrat, but on the day of the show, Juan is forced to work late at his job; when he finally arrives at the concert hall, he discovers Lucia has already left to spend the evening with Nacho. Twenty-five years later, Lucia and Juan are both lonely and emotionally isolated, and they wonder how much impact this event had on their later relationships. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Set in an unknown time and place during the 18th century, Isabel Coixet's follow-up to her 1996 drama Cosas Que Nunca Te Dije/Things I Never Told You centers on the reminiscences of The Teacher (Julio Nuñez), a 68-year-old man who shows up at the home of young Martin (Gary Piquer) and his ailing wife, with whose sister The Teacher was once romantically involved. The Teacher fell in love with Matilde (Olalla Moreno) sixty years ago when his father, a doctor, took him along on a housecall when she was ill. He meets Matilde again twenty years in the future and finds that though she has married Leon (Christopher Thompson) a French messenger, she still possesses a bewitching childlike innocence. Matilde does not realize that her spouse has fallen into a passionate relationship with the local fencing instructor's seductive daughter Valeria. After another long absence, The Teacher returns to the village. This time Matilde has heard about the ongoing affair. Miserable and eager to learn the truth, she begs The Teacher to take her to the fencing school where Leon and Valeria tryst so she can see for herself. The gallant Teacher refuses, but this doesn't stop the determined Matilde, and tragedy ensues. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Ten years ago Oxford archaeology professor Robert Rylands suddenly and mysteriously left the college and the town to embark upon a long journey. His sudden return creates quite a stir, and most of this English-language Spanish drama, based on a novel by Javier Marias, centers on the effect it has upon those who know and love him. As soon as he arrives, Rylands heads straight for the police department and sits down to tell a policeman and good friend about his adventure. The plot then moves to Alfred, a fellow lecturer who lives with Jill, his sister and her daughter, Sue. Juan, a Spanish guest lecturer is also staying with them. Jill is worried about Alfred who has been suffering from a bizarre illness that causes him to faint and makes it difficult for him to use his left hand. She finds Rylands' sudden reappearance most distracting. Somehow the lives of Rylands, Jill and Alfred are connected, and both Sue and Juan decide to find out how. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
