Jorge Rodriguez Paz Movies
Directed by Francisco J. Lombardi, Ojo que no ven (What the Eye Doesn't See) follows several fictional story lines set against a backdrop of the real-life collapse of Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori's regime. There's Colonel Revoredo (Gianfranco Brero), who knows he'll be lucky to escape the country with his life, let alone military status; lawyer Penaflor del Aguila (Gustavo Bueno), whose knack for bribing corrupt officials is now useless; and Mercedes (Melania Urbina), a teenage girl desperately trying to settle the legal and medical situations of her older family members, to name a few. Meanwhile, Helena (Patricia Pereyra), a forensic anthropologist, is raped inside of a mass gravesite, while her husband, unbeknownst to her, is assassinated. Less serious affairs reside inside of a hospital, where two elderly patients quarrel over the current state of affairs, and within a television station, where an overworked makeup artist gets a rude awakening of sorts. Though the characters' situations are vastly different, a common thread -- the fall of the government as they knew it -- unites them, and leads to a consequence none were prepared for. The film also features Paul Vega, Tatiana Astengo, Martin Chauca, Don Lucho, Rodolfo Lopez, and Jorge Rodriguez Paz. ~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

Brazilian director Walter Salles Jr. follows up the Golden Globe-nominated Behind the Sun with this filmed adaptation of Argentinian-born Cuban revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara's journals of the same name. The Motorcycle Diaries stars Gael García Bernal (Y Tu Mamá También, Amores Perros) as a young, pre-revolution Guevara, a 23-year-old medical student in 1952 traveling across South America on a motorcycle with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna), who co-wrote the source material. As they embark on their journey, both young men come of age and find their individual world views broadened farther than they ever expected. The Motorcycle Diaries premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Matthew Tobey, All Movie Guide

Set in a dusty, remote Peruvian village, a police captain finds himself flirting with, and eventually seduced by, his darker nature after he begins investigating a bizarre, gruesome series of ritual killings that may be linked to the sacrificial rites of an ancient Indian civilization. After finding the eyeless heads of several young men, captain Percy heads for the office of Catalino Pinto, the curator of a local museum who is also an expert on ancient cultures. It is Pinto who opens the door and leads Percy down a ruinous path of death from which there can be no return. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
A strange woman named Doña Carmen puts mentally perturbed men and women to work making glasses out of bottles -- as discarded and devalued by society as the workers themselves. While the greedy doña does not pay her workers any money, she rakes in a profit from the sale of the glasses -- a fact which alerts a local teen gang to the possibility of hidden lucre somewhere on the premises. They have Alejandro (Pablo Serra), one of their number insinuate himself into the Doña's household, where he meets the lovely Maruja (Elena Romero) and is immediately attracted to the young woman -- Doña Carmen's god-daughter. As Maruja and Alejandro work out their relationship, there is mayhem and murder and violence -- which does not do anything to improve the less-than-believable "lunatic" environment of the glass factory, or the garbled social message that may underlie the scenario of the underprivileged and exploited workers. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide

A wandering vagabond is seized, for no good reason, and prosecuted for a series of child murders on the flimsiest of evidence. The authorities need to pacify the public and make an example of someone, and as a man without allies, the vagabond is chosen. This film details the vagabond's arrest and trial and extensively depicts the circumstances surrounding his execution by the cynical and probably corrupt rulers of his country. ~ Clarke Fountain, All Movie Guide
