Marvel Comics' vigilante character The Punisher gets another big-screen outing in this third film incarnation of the character, this time from Green Street Hooligans director Lexi Alexander. Fueled by revenge and aided by his trusted weapons expert, Microchip (Wayne Knight), vigilante Frank Castle (Rome's Ray Stevenson) turns the New York City streets red with blood as he takes down each and every member of the crime syndicate responsible for the death of his wife and two kids. As the law-appointed "Punisher Task Force" closes in on him, the antihero does battle with Billy Russoti (Dominic West), aka Jigsaw, a nickname given by him to reflect the disfigurement handed to him by Castle. With the help of his psychotic brother, Loony Bin Jim (Doug Hutchison), Jigsaw recruits the criminals of the city to band together to bring down The Punisher, using the wife (played by Dexter's Julie Benz) and daughter of a slayed FBI agent as bait. The ABC sitcom Cavemen was inspired by a popular TV advertising campaign for GEICO Auto Insurance. These were the ads which a smarmy commercial spokesman who claimed that a GEICO policy was so simple that "Even a caveman could understand it" was taken to task by a pair of real cavemen, who despite their goonish Neanderthal appearance--matted hair, buck teeth, bushy eyebrows et.al.--were urbane, sardonically witty and very easily offended! In the weekly-series version of this concept, a trio of young, hip cavemen lived and worked in contemporary San Diego, doing their best to fit in with the non-caveman world while still remaining fiercely loyal to their prehistoric "roots". Bill English played Joel Claybrook, the hardest-working of the three "primitives", who secretly broke the unofficial Code of the "Maggers" (a nickmame for Cro-Magnons) by falling in love with Kate (Kaitlin Doubleday), a blonde, blue eyed "Sape" (short for "Homo Sapiens", a cavemen term for those who'd evolved into "modern" humans). Nick Kroll was Joel's roommate Nick Hedge, a sullen slacker who militantly disapproved of mixing the species and had no intention of ever assimilating into the "Sape" world. Sam Huntington rounded out the threesome as Joel's nerdish, whiny younger brother Andy. Jeff Daniel Phillips, who'd starred in the original GEICO commercials, was seen as the protagonist's friend and fellow "Magger" Maurice. Others in the cast included Stephanie Lemelin as Kate's best friend Thorne, a "Sape" with an insatiable Caveman fetish, and Julie White as Leslie, the realtor for the boys' apartment building, who had to keep admonishing them to behave like everyone else and not be so "primal." The ABC publicity department proudly trumpetted the rather obvious fact that Cavemen was intended to be a metaphorical slam against racial prejudice (it was even more obvious in the pilot episode, which was set deep in the American south--Atlanta, to be exact) and a plea for tolerance and understanding for those among us who were a little bit different. . .or even a whole lot different! The series' unsung heroes were the talented members of the makeup crew, who convincingly transformed the three stars into hirsute cavedwellers without sacrificing the actors' personalities or hampering their natural facial movements. These days the one-time charmer has officially become world-class heel. A bed-hopping barfly whose constant quest for casual sex steadily corroded his soul, Dave is fortunate enough to get a second shot at love when the only women he ever truly cared about suddenly wanders back into his life. The Thin Red Line star Dash Mihok takes the lead in director Alan Brown's small-scale anti-war drama following a young Iraq War veteran whose psychological scars run far deeper than his still-tender shrapnel wounds. Ben (Mihik) has just gotten back from Iraq, though it will be some time before his brain catches up with his body. Hoping that by opening up to other veterans he will be able to leave his traumatic past behind and move forward with life, the shell-shocked Ben starts attending group therapy sessions videotaped by naïve young filmmaker Nick ($Spenser Treat Clark). But while the talkative Nick and the withdrawn Ben are without question polar opposites, a connection is formed and Nick ultimately accompanies Ben to an isolated country home where the haunted veteran plans to convalesce. Over the course of their time together, Ben learns the importance of reaching out for new friendships as Nick discovers the value of human connections. Directed by Roland Emmerich, this mega-budget, special-effects-laden epic revolves around the onset of an international series of crises brought on by the long-term results of the greenhouse effect. At the eye of the storm is paleoclimatologist (a professor dedicated to the study of weather patterns throughout the ages) Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), who voluntarily takes on the preservation of the world in the dawn of the next ice age and all the disaster that comes along with it -- violent hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, massive floods, etc. Hall must also contact his son, Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who was in the middle of an academic competition in New York City when the chaos begun. In addition to facing the largest-scale onslaught of natural catastrophes in the history of humankind, Jack, in his journey north, must contend with the masses fleeing south in an attempt to resettle in a warmer climate. Few figures in professional baseball had a career quite like Pete Rose -- and practically no one who climbed so high fell so hard. Rose made his major-league debut playing second base with the Cincinnati Reds in 1963; nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" for his daringness and enthusiasm over the course of his career, Rose played in eighteen All-Star games, earned three World Series rings, broke Ty Cobb's record for career hits, and in 1975 was named Sportsman of the Year by both Sports Illustrated and The Sporting News. In 1984, after six years with other teams, Rose returned to the Reds, signing on as both player and manager at the age of 43; he continued to play until 1986, and stepped down as manager in 1989. That same year, a dark secret Rose had been hiding for years came to the surface -- Rose had for years been dealing with an addiction to gambling, and after falling deep in debt to bookies by betting on horse racing, he attempted to make the money back by betting on baseball, including wagering on his own team and his own games. These revelations led to Rose being banned from professional baseball, a stay in prison when an IRS investigation discovered he had failed to pay taxes on sale of memorabilia, and a decision that would prevent him from entering the Baseball Hall of Fame, though Rose denied the gambling allegations. (In his 2004 autobiography, Rose finally confessed that he did gamble on baseball but denied betting on his own teams.) Hustle stars Tom Sizemore as Pete Rose in this biographical drama produced for the cable sports network ESPN, which chronicles Rose's rise to fame, his fall from grace as he became involved with gambling, and Rose's ongoing fight to be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The disappearance of a military leader and the death of four of his men leads two investigators to wade through a morass of deceptions and half-truths in search of the facts in this thriller. Sgt. Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson) is the leader of an elite team of U.S. Army Special Forces operatives known as the Army Rangers; West is known as a highly effective officer, but one with a short temper and aggressive attitude who is not well liked by his soldiers. During a seemingly routine training exercise in Panama, a hurricane sweeps in, and four of West's six men are dead, while West himself seems to have vanished. Eager to get the facts behind what happened, Col. Bill Styles (Tim Daly) assigns Capt. Julia Osborne (Connie Nielsen) to investigate. However, Osborne is having a hard time getting the two survivors to talk, so Styles brings in Tom Hardy (John Travolta), a former Army Ranger who served under West and became a first-class interrogator; Hardy later became a DEA agent, but left law enforcement after allegations of corruption. Hardy interviews Dunbar (Brian Van Holt), who claims that the four soldiers had been murdered, and West was killed in retaliation. Kendall (Giovanni Ribisi), the other survivor (whose father is a powerful officer) has a very different story of how the five men turned up dead, and it's up to Hardy and Osborne to determine who is telling the truth -- or if anyone is saying exactly what happened. Basic marked the first time John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson appeared in the same film together since their breakthrough roles in Pulp Fiction. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

A first feature from the man best known as the host of the hugely successful reality-TV series Survivor, Jeff Probst's twisty thriller is centered around the world of card-playing and con men. A street artist, Tepper (Erik Palladino), finds a wallet outside his apartment building one rainy New York night and phones a number he finds inside. He finds out it belongs to Avery Phillips (James Earl Jones) but notices it contains a lottery ticket worth six million dollars and foolishly tells his garrulous pal Fishman (Matthew Lillard). On the night of their poker game, two more men enter the equation: Quigley (Ryan Reynolds), a divorced sad-sack, and Bolan (Dash Mihok). After Tepper phones him, Avery decides to sit in on their game, unaware that Tepper has his winning lottery ticket. As their game progresses, Tepper's sense of ethics is put to the test, as are the loyalties of the men at the game. Robert Forster co-stars as a street cop thrown into the proceedings, and Carly Pope appears as Tepper's longtime girlfriend Carla. ~ Jason Clark, All Movie Guide

A wandering stranger who has developed a strong taste for morphine, The Morphanist (Brad Hunt) has become a ruthless hired gun with little remorse and no conscience. Following him on his bloody trail in hopes of finding redemption for his brother, The Journeyman (Daniel Lapaine) remains ever vigilant in his efforts as the addict moves closer to death with every move. As The Morphinist sets his sites on the payroll office of a mining company owned by the same man who raided ranch that the brothers lived on as children, he makes off with a tidy stash before one of his ill-fated accomplices sets out on a blood-soaked revenge spree. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

What do you do if you're a white guy in a white town who happens to love black music? Flip (Danny Hoch) is a middle-class kid from the Iowa corn belt, but he doesn't think of himself as just another guy from farm country. Flip loves hip-hop, and he longs to be respected as a hard-core rapper. But a white guy from Iowa who drops mad rhymes looks weird. While Flip and his buddies Trevor (Mark Webber) and James (Dash Mihok) may have the clothes, the style, and the lingo down pat, to most folks they look like three white boys trying to be black. When Khalid (Eugene Byrd), an African-American from Chicago, transfers into Flip's school, Flip comes to his rescue when other kids give him a hard time, and, while Khalid is as baffled by Flip's affectations as most people, a friendship grows between them, and Khalid grudgingly agrees to take Flip and his crew to Chicago, where they get a look at hip-hop culture in a way they haven't seen before. Director Marc Levin previously explored elements of hip-hop culture in his first dramatic film, Slam; he also made a number of acclaimed documentaries, including Gang War: Bangin' in Little Rock, about middle-class kids who have absorbed the gang lifestyle through popular culture.
