Cast a Giant Shadow is a big-budget, glossy action/adventure story set at the time that Israel became a nation. American Army officer Colonel David Marcus is recruited by the yet-to-exist Israel to help form an army. Marcus is conflicted because of his sudden appreciation for his Jewish heritage. Realizing that each of Israel's Arab nations has vowed to invade the poorly prepared country once the partition has been made, Marcus is made commander of the Israeli forces just before the war begins. In this comedy, a matchmaker has a matchless daughter. Try as he might, he cannot seem to find anyone for her. He is then hired to find a match for the daughter of a wealthy person. He sets her up with a village idiot, a look-a-like for the young woman's tutor upon whom she has an enormous crush. Unfortunately, her father rejects his daughter's beau because he is too middle-class. The clever girl then pretends to fall for the dolt and therefore is able to keep seeing her tutor. In this fast-paced musical farce--the first made in Israel--a wealthy but uneducated fellow attempts to marry his stuttering son to the daughter of a snobbish family. The family eventually accepts him because his father is so wealthy. Unfortunately, the young man loves another, who in turn loves someone else. Her true love, the family outcast, cares little for the rigid Orthodox Jewish traditions and he bears a striking resemblance to the speech-impeded son. Romantic mayhem ensues. In this haunting drama, one actor plays seven roles: a conductor, his only legitimate son, and his five illegitimate sons. One of the sons is a transvestite who uses two alias. Esteemed Israeli theatrical actor Meir Margalith, in his first film role, plays an upper-class wannabe who bites off more class than he can chew. Though unable to procure an income to sustain his lifestyle, diplomat Noah Simchon (Margalith) moves his oddball family into a penthouse apartment. Noah hopes that by continuing to act as if he were part of the upper echelon, he could wow the elite and ultimately be accepted into their ranks.
