A handsome actor with leading-man looks and charisma to spare, one only wonders why it took actor Matthew Fox's career over a decade to finally set sail with his starring role as natural-born leader Jack on the hit ABC series Lost. Commanding the screen as the brave but conflicted organizer of a group of airplane-crash survivors stranded on a mysterious island, Fox played no small part in bringing compelling drama back to the small screen in a time when reality television seemed to dominate the dial. Of course, Lost wasn't Fox's first foray into television drama, having previously established himself as one of five siblings prematurely thrust into adulthood when their parents are killed by a drunk driver in the Golden Globe-winning Party of Five, but it did find him excelling in a manner that could point to a long and fruitful career. Unlike many actors who realize their calling early in life, in the Wyoming native's early years, it seemed as if an acting career was the absolute farthest thing imaginable in terms of future job prospects. Fox was raised on a ranch that raised horses and barley, and when it came time to choose a college, he opted to study economics at Columbia University -- where he also made quite a name for himself on the gridiron.All arrows pointed to a prosperous future career on Wall Street, but when Fox was convinced to try his hand at modeling, the chips seemed to fall into place, and he was soon appearing on television commercials and essaying guest appearances on such popular sitcoms as Wings. In 1992, Fox went back to college for a role in the short-lived TV comedy Freshman Dorm, and though that show itself was decidedly short-lived, it helped his career by leading to roles in the film My Boyfriend's Back, the made-for-television feature If I Die Before I Wake, and, eventually, Party of Five. After his wining performance in Party of Five making Fox a familiar face to television viewers, it seemed only a matter of time before he stuck out on his own. Following a touching turn opposite Donald Sutherland in the made-for-television drama Behind the Mask, Fox took the role of an ex-policeman-turned-private investigator whose near-death experience bridges a gap to the spirit world in the supernaturally charged series Haunted, which was quickly canceled despite the fact that it was beginning to see a dedicated fan base. If Fox's career seemed to be floundering somewhat in the wake of Party of Five, that would certainly change when Lost debuted on ABC to impressive ratings in late 2004. "When am I?" -- John Locke's chronological confusion sums up Season 5, which hopscotches dizzyingly between the 1970s and 2008 as it charts the Oceanic Six's return to the island and reveals important island secrets. On the island, Locke (Terry O'Quinn) is the new leader of the Others. But in L.A., he's dead, and his death plays a key role in getting Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), Hurley (Jorge Garcia) and Sun (Yunjin Kim) to return via Ajira Airways. Sayid (Naveen Andrews) refuses to join his fellow former castaways, but winds up being escorted onto the Guam-bound flight by a bounty hunter named Ilana (Zuleikha Robinson). Ben (Michael Emerson) must return, too, to face judgment for allowing his daughter Alex to die. Their flight -- with Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey) at the controls -- is a bumpy one, but the final destination is indeed the island. Ben, Sun, Ilana and Frank remain fixed in time upon their return to the island, but Jack, Kate, Hurley and Sayid are flashed back in time to 1977, where they are reunited with Sawyer (Josh Holloway) and Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell). After surviving a series of time-travel flashes, Sawyer and Juliet landed in the 1970s and forged a close relationship with each other and the Dharma Initiative, which also welcomes Miles Straume (Ken Leung). Meanwhile, Miles' colleague Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) embarks on a time-traveling mission that introduces him to a nuclear bomb named Jughead and a young woman named Ellie. A true story of tragedy, hope, and resilience comes to the screen in this sports drama. Huntington, WV, is home to Marshall University, a school where college football is a way of life. Huntington is also a town that learned to deal with tragedy in the fall of 1970 when Marshall's "Thundering Herd" boarded an airliner to return home after a football game in North Carolina. The jet crashed into a hill due to bad weather, and 75 members of Marshall's football squad and athletic staff died that night. Left without the creature comforts and basic necessities of civilization, the 48 survivors are forced to rely upon one another to stay alive -- and given the personality quirks of these survivors, this won't be easy during the first season of the ABC hit series Lost. Generally with the help of flashbacks, viewers learn a number of deep dark secrets about the castaways on a need-to-know basis, especially the demons plaguing Dr. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox) and one-hit-wonder rock star Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan). Every so often, a crisis arises for the principal purpose of revealing a hitherto unknown and unsuspected aspect of one of the characters. Inevitably, hostilities both minor and serious arise from the basic fundamental differences among the survivors: Korean couple Jin and Sun Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim, Yunjin Kim) are unable to uphold their family traditions under the circumstances, while their inability to speak English creates an additional barrier between themselves and the others; and the MacGyver-like resourcefulness of former Iraqi Republican Guard Sayid (Naveen Andrews) is not enough to overcome the racism of some of his fellow passengers. Then there is the unfriendly aura of the island itself, with its inscrutable topography, and the bizarre menagerie of wild animals, ranging from a polar bear to a (possible) dinosaur! Also, the discovery in one episode of two long-dead bodies certainly does nothing to uplift the rescue hopes of the hapless survivors. At long, long last, 30-year-old Charlie Salinger (Matthew Fox), legal guardian of his four younger siblings, has tied the matrimonial knot with his erstwhile sweetheart Kirsten Bennett (Paula Devicq), who had come into the lives of the Salingers when she was hired as nanny for the younger children during Season One of Party of Five. By the time that the series' sixth and final season has run its course, Charlie and Kirsten will have become parents. The made-for-TV Behind the Mask is the true story of Dr. Bob Shushan, a workaholic who disdains any sort of private life--and neglects his family in the process--the better to help his patients at the British Columbian Centre for the Mentally and Physically Disabled. When Shushan suffers a heart attack, his life is saved by the Centre's mentally handicapped janitor, James Jones (Matthew Fox)--and in the ensuing weeks, doctor and patient become closer than any father and son could ever be. Partly out of gratitude, Shushan makes it his mission to locate James' long-estranged biological father. Charlie and his 20-year-old brother Bailey (Scott Wolf) later engage in a nasty custody battle over little Owen, but eventually Charlie allows Owen to live with Bailey and his girl friend Sarah (Jennifer Love Hewitt). Meanwhile, although 19-year-old Julia Salinger (Neve Campbell) is still the wife of Griffin Holbrook (Jeremy London), she enters into an affair with Ned Grayson (Scott Bairstow), the violent-tempered boyfriend of Julia's Stanford roommate Maggie (Heather McComb). The most daunting development in Party of Five's fourth season centers around 28-year-old Charlie Salinger (Matthew Fox), the legal guardian of his four orphaned siblings. After being the family's primary breadwinner since the deaths of his parents, Charlie is suddenly stopped in his tracks when he is diagnosed with Hodkin's disease. It now falls to Charlie's 19-year-old brother Bailey (Scott Wolf), the family's treasurer and chief problem-solver, to care for Charlie in the same selfless manner that Charlie has so long cared for him. This requires Bailey to drop out of college and assume ownership of the family's San Francisco restaurant; unfortunately, the pressures of his new responsibilities drives Bailey to drink. . .and drink. . .and drink. Ending up in Alcoholics Anonymous, Charlie meets and falls in love with the much-older Annie Mott (Paige Turco), who has a daughter named Natalie (Allison Bertolini). Eventually Annie will return to her boozing and run out on both Bailey and her daughter, whereupon Bailey's onetime girlfriend Sarah (Jennifer Love Hewitt) to take charge of Natalie. And by the time the season has ended and Bailey has become fulltime manager of Salinger's, he and Sarah are sweethearts again. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Julia Salinger (Neve Campbell) likewise gives up college in order to support her new husband Griffin (Jeremy London) when his business goes belly-up; before long Julia and Griffin have moved back in with her siblings, and ultimately Julia is able to resume her education at Stanford. And elsewhere on the matrimonial front, the family's former nanny--and Charlie's former fiancée--Kirsten Bennett (Paul Devicq) returns to San Francisco with her new husband, Dr. Paul Thomas (Tim Dekay), in tow. The good news at season's end is that Charlie has been cured of his disease. Actor Bob Balaban directed this black comedy for Disney concerning a young zombie's love for a pretty high school girl. Johnny Dingle (Andrew Lowery) is a sweet-natured soul who has been in love with Missy McCloud (Traci Lind) ever since first grade, but he's always been reluctant to ask her out, fearing rejection. Now that the high school prom is coming, he devises a plan to make Missy say yes when he musters up the courage to ask her to the dance. Johnny and his pal Eddie (Danny Zorn) concoct a plan that will make it look as if Johnny saves her life. Unfortunately, Johnny's plan goes amiss and he's actually killed. But even death doesn't dissuade Johnny and he rises from his grave to take her to the prom. Curiously enough, Missy is more attracted to Johnny now that he is dead than when he was alive (despite his falling body parts). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

For many years, Joe's high-school baseball pitching record has been unbroken. All this may change, however, as a talented young student named Ty Warner (a pre-Party of Five Matthew Fox) comes ever closer to surpassing the number of strikeouts toted up by Joe (Tim Daly).
