Based on the best-selling novel by Joyce Barkhouse, the popular Canadian TV series Pit Pony returns for a second season of eighteen episodes. Set in the Nova Scotia mining community of Cape Breton in the early 20th century, the series is told from the viewpoint of Willie MacLean (Alex Wrethell), youngest member of the sprawling MacLean family of miners. Taking the wonders of the "new age" in stride, Willie also manfully copes with the deprivations of his hardscrabble existence, trying to look on the bright side of life even as his community is burdened with grinding poverty, fatal mine accidents, and the ever-burgeoning hostility between the workers and the mine owners. As in Season One, Willie seeks out advice and consul from his brother-in-law Ned Hall (Shaun Smyth), the feisty, quick-tempered husband of Willie's oldest sister Nellie (Jennie Raymond). Also on hand to help Willie navigate life's highway is his surrogate father Charley (Denny Doherty). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The first season of the Canadian drama series Pit Pony is comprised of 26 episodes, beginning with the pilot "The Light to the Future", which introduces the people of Cape Breton, a small Nova Scotian mining community in the early 1900s. Two of the town's main families, the MacLeans and the Halls, are brought together when Ned Hall (Shaun Smyth) proposes to Nellie MacLean (Jennie Raymond. Acting as surrogate mother to practically everyone in town is the loquacious Mrs. MacTavish (Mary-Colin Chisholm), whose dispensations of gossip serve to set up many of the storylines and establish the principal characters. The action in the ensuing episodes is largely divided between the everyday dangers and deprivations facing the male mine workers and the patience and fortitude exhibited by their womenfolk. Also, several stories revolve around the antics of the community's children, who just can't seem to steer clear of mischief. And, as is customary in turn-of-the-century mining towns, the sporadic and sometimes violent disputes between management and labor, the perils and occasional tragedies resulting from working deep beneath the earth, and the mundane problems of keeping money in the coffers and food on the table, are all taken in stride. Throughout, the character of Willie (Alex Wrathell, youngest member of the MacLean family, acts as the audience's "eyes", occasionally pausing to accept advice from his headstrong brother-in-law Ned and his surrogate father Charley (Denny Doherty). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this romantic comedy, Harriet is convinced that she's on top of the world. She has two men on a string: her main squeeze, Nick, is a decidedly unintellectual participant in the rock scene; Jeremy is a far more cultured and wealthy fellow whom she takes advantage of (she thinks) with impunity. Her friend Myra supports her all the way down the line and feels that her exploitation of the boring rich fellow serves him right for wanting to marry her. However, Jeremy is a lot deeper than either of the women imagine and is not only fully aware of Harriet's duplicity, but is guiding it so that is serves his long-term goals -- one of which is to win her heart. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

A young man who fantasizes about an older woman discovers his daydreams may be turning into realities in this coming-of-age comedy-drama. Eric (Corey Haim) and Donald (Andrew Miller) are two teenage boys growing up in a small farming community in Canada in the mid-1950's. Eric and Donald are at the uncomfortable age where their interest in women far outstrips their knowledge of how to get women interested in them. Eric is also still recovering from the death of his mother, while he struggles to come to terms with the remarriage of his father, Thorvald (Kier Dullea), to Eva (Genevieve Bujold). As local gas jockey Mr. Todd (Robbie Coltrane) offers Eric and Donald advice on courting the fairer sex, Eric discovers Vera (Barbara Williams), the attractive wife of the farmer living next door, enjoys skinny-dipping with her daughters, and Eric digs a makeshift "hideout" where he can watch her undetected. Eric begins to strike up a friendship with Vera, while unknown to him, Vera becomes increasingly unhappy in her marriage. One day, Vera catches Eric as he watches her swimming, but rather than reacting with anger, she reaches out to the inexperienced youth. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
