The romantic rivalry in this often violent Chinese melodrama is a thinly veiled metaphorical commentary on the sad condition of Shanghai's youth, a wounded generation moving aimlessly towards a bleak future. Though made in 1994, it was not released until the end of the following year. A Xi has just been released from prison and goes looking for his former lover Li Xin, whom he has not seen since he was sentenced to nine years after killing a fellow teen. Unfortunately, Li Xin has fallen in love with La La. Both young men begin competing for her love. That rivalry becomes increasingly tense as the story progresses. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

After being dumped by his girlfriend, Lei Haiyang (Pan Yueming) hitches a truck ride to Beijing. Also along for the ride is Yanzi (Li Min), a gaudily dressed runaway. En route to Beijing, Lei falls asleep, and when he wakes up, the truck is parked in some woods while Yanzi is apparently being raped by the truck driver and his companion. A frightened Lei hides in the underbrush where he is noticed only by Yanzi, with whom he exchanges a lingering gaze as she is dragged away. Later, in Beijing, Lei sees a report on television about a female corpse that has been discovered in the woods, and decides to tell the police what he knows. After speaking with the police, he has a chance encounter in the streets with a girl who looks exactly like Yanzi, but who denies that she is the same person. Their meeting catalyzes a friendship that eventually becomes a romance, and slowly reveals what really happened in the woods. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi
