Serge Hazanavicius Movies

Gallic actor Serge Hazanavicius debuted in film not as an on-camera presence but as a director, helming a plethora of short-subject films. He shifted gears to focus on acting, then moved into supporting feature roles with a small turn in Peter Kassovitz's 1992 comedy Drôle d'oiseaux and a more substantial part as the romantic lead opposite the alluring Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi in director Laurence Barbosa's light romantic comedy Les Gens Normaux N'ont Rien d'exceptionnel (1993). These assignments seemed to set a precedent for the work that followed, as one comedic project after another ensued (witness 1996's Delphine 1-Yvan 0, 1997's Le Déménagement, and 2001's Barnie et Ses Petites Contrarietes), in time, however, Hazanavicius revealed more of a dramatic flair, receiving particularly strong acclaim for his work opposite Kristin Scott Thomas and Elsa Zylberstein in director Philippe Claudel's poignant psychological drama I've Loved You So Long... (2007). ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Their relationship fractured when older sister Juliette is sentenced to 15 years in prison, two siblings wage an emotional battle to rebuild their relationship, overcome the secrets that keep them apart, and finally express the thoughts that have lain dormant for well over a decade. The moment Juliette was convicted, her parents declared that they wanted nothing to do with her. Now, after 15 years behind bars, Juliette is a free woman and in desperate need of a human connection. When Juliette's younger sister, Léa, is approached by a prison social worker and asked if she would be willing to provide her recently paroled sibling with a place to live, she doesn't hesitate to open her doors and share her home. But Léa is happily married with two adopted daughters, and her husband, Luc, is uneasy with the arrangement. Still, the house is large, the couple is used to having company, and the two young girls are thrilled to have a new aunt. As Juliette gets settled, Léa does her best to make her feel welcome. Likewise, Léa's colleague Michel and emigrant couple Samir and Kaïsha also offer to help Juliette readjust to life on the outside. Along the way, Juliette slowly begins to emerge from her shell and Léa realizes just how much she missed her sister. Perhaps if she can put aside her feelings of guilt long enough to truly understand her sister's plight, these two strangers can finally remember what it means to be family. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A handful of Parisians leave the city behind and head for the beach, with a variety of romantic predicaments following in their wake in this light comedy. Philippe (Serge Hazanavicius) takes his wife and children on a vacation by the sea; however, his lively (and younger) mistress Camille (Sandrine Le Berre) follows him, with little intention of being discreet. Anita (Agnes Soral), who is pregnant, heads out for some sun and fresh air with her partner, Pauline (Veronique Boulanger), though Pauline soon finds her commitment to fidelity severely tested. Attractive Carla (Vanessa Gravina) hits the beach with her less glamorous friend Laurette (Isabelle Gelinas), who has had problems finding the man of her dreams. Rafik (Yasmine Belmadi) and his kid brother Aziz (Maher Kamoun) are enjoying the ocean thanks to tickets they received as a present. And Jimmy (Gad Elmaleh) is a single guy looking for love (or something like it), and he's not shy about asking any woman that crosses his path. Les Gens En Maillot De Bain Ne Sont Pas (Forcement) Superficiels was the first feature directed by Eric Assous, who previously established himself as a screenwriter. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A man keeping a few too many secrets finds them coming back to haunt him in this farcical comedy. Barnie (Fabrice Luchini) is an ordinary looking guy working in the shipping business who happens to have an unusually busy love life. While seemingly happily married to Lucie (Nathalie Baye) in Calais, Barnie has not one but two lovers in London -- Margot (Marie Gillian), a younger woman who works in commercial art, and Mark (Hugo Speer), a man employed by an auction house. Lucie doesn't know about Barnie's lovers, and neither Margot nor Mark is aware of Barnie's wife -- or his bisexuality. As chance would have it, all three decide upon the same present for Barnie's 45th birthday -- tickets for a getaway to Venice on the Orient Express. Barnie decides holding on to his marriage is his first priority, so he opts to visit Venice with Lucie, sending back Mark and Margot's tickets with polite notes of regret. However, Mark's letter is sealed in Margot's envelope and vice versa, and soon the two know about each other, with a little detective work tipping them off to the full extent of Barnie's secret life. Eager for revenge, Mark and Margot pay a visit to Venice, where posing as man and wife they drop in unannounced on Barnie and Lucie, throwing the unfaithful husband into a panic. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A man struggles to support his family while remaining true to his ideals in this drama set in Europe during the 1930s. Orfeo Mancini (Jacques Gamblin) and his wife Nella (Yael Abecassis) are a pair of working-class Italians who years ago swore allegiance to the Communist party. With Mussolini on the rise, Orfeo and Nella come to the conclusion that they are no longer welcome in their native land, and they decide to pull up stakes and move to America with their two children. As a result of some confusion en route, the Mancinis end up in Marseilles rather than the United States; needing work, Orfeo takes a job working as a manual laborer for a wealthy landowner (Serge Hazanavicius). This requires a serious amount of pride-swallowing on Orfeo's part, since his new boss is an Italian expatriate who once courted Nella. The situation becomes all the more difficult for Orfeo when his employer throws his allegiances behind the growing fascist movement. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
