Ichak Fintzi plays the painter Czontvary (1854-1919) in this biographical drama. The gifted artist was recognized over 30 years after his death by a communist country that considered him to be "rehabilitated" by the 1950s. The one-time pharmacist left his work behind at age 40 to devote his life to massive frescoes depicting Hungarian life and the ruins of Italy. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Hungarian-born Laszlo Szabo returned to his native country to play the part of Dibusz in this comedy. When the residents of a large old house learn that it is to be torn down and that they will be relocated elsewhere, an intense game gets underway. As is usual in such instances, the residents will be given new apartments commensurate in size with their old ones. Dibusz sees this as an opportunity to temporarily enlarge his "assigned" space in the condemned building. He wants to be reassigned to an apartment which is larger than his current bathless one-room space. He and a neighbor cooperate to break down the walls that separate their spaces from that of an old woman who just died after a brief tussle. Still not satisfied, he tries to marry one of two spinster women who live together but is rejected. In the course of the film, he has intense encounters of one sort or another with anyone who might be of help to him in his quest. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Flashbacks stimulated during one day and night are experienced by a man and his new wife who live as boarders in the home of a war widow and her young son. The boy's father, a heroic doctor who served in the resistance during World War II, was a widely recognized hero, and the young newlyweds have been asked by the widow to travel to a nearby village to be present at the dedication of a memorial plaque in his honor. Already thoroughly tired of his legend, they are forced to sit through lengthy reminiscences by many people who knew him. Some of these tales bring up painful bits of family history, as when a pair of sisters who were in love with the dashing doctor recount how they were separated from him by the boy's mother. However, being immersed in the human side of his father's legend removes the shadow that has dogged the young boy, and the newlyweds also emerge happier with one another. This story is based on a play by Imre Szasz. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Love and heartbreak are not just for the young, as this Hungarian film shows. Nominated for the 1974 Academy Award for "Best Foreign Film," it tells the story of two sixtyish sisters. The younger sister, a singing teacher, has remained in Hungary, and the older one lives in West Germany. Despite many requests from her older sister, the teacher remains in Hungary at least partly due to her love for a retired opera singer. As letters pass between the two sisters, many flashbacks tell the story of their childhood. When the younger sister discovers that the opera singer has a new girlfriend, she takes drastic action to deal with her rejection. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

He remains fundamentally untouched, but he finally gets his comeuppance at a grand dinner in a fine restaurant. The headwaiter confides in him at great length about troubles he is having with his wife, who was one of Szindbad's conquests. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Set in 1922 when the world was quite different, this conventional drama by director Laszlo Ranody looks at the mix of one's economic station in life and the nature of romantic love. A young servant in a wealthy family is carrying on an affair with a woman who works for the same household. Even though he has this female "friend," he harbors a deep desire for the lady of the house, someone far beyond his reach on the economic and social scale. The Man Who Was Exchanged is the English-language title of this Hungarian domestic drama. Based on a play by Adorjan Bonyi, the plot centers on Peter Benedik (Ferenc Kiss), a far-from-faithful husband who carries on an affair with a charming widow. While serving in WWI, Benedik befriends another soldier, Istvain Pongracz, who looks exactly like him (and who is also played by Ferenc Kiss). During an enemy attack, Benedik is killed and Pongracz is wounded. Their name-tags are accidentally switched, and as a result the amnesic Pongracz is sent back to Benedik's home and family. Convinced that he is Benedik, Pongracz turns out to be a better and more thoughtful husband than his look-alike ever could have been. Upon regaining his memory, Pongracz realizes that he's too much in love with Mrs. Benedik ever to give her up, leading to a happy ending for everyone except Benedik's widow mistress. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Margit Dayka stars as Rozsi, an orphan girl who discovers upon reaching adulthood that she may be of Jewish parentage. The laws being what they were in Hungary in the 1930s, Rozsi's boyfriend Andris (Paul Javor) is worried that he won't be permitted to marry her. Deserted by Adnris, Rozsi resigns herself to her fate, befriending a kindly innkeeper who arranges for her adoption into a wealthy Jewish family. Finally, Andris determines that he's going to marry the girl, no matter what her religion -- but is saved from ostracism when he finds out that Rozsi isn't Jewish after all. The chances of this picture ever being revived are slim to none; even though the plotline promotes tolerance rather than racial divisiveness, it still intimates that there's something a bit wrong about not being 100 percent Christian. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
