Thomas Meighan and Leatrice Joy star in this slight but amusing comedy-melodrama; they would appear together again later in the year in a far more prestigious film -- Cecil B. DeMille's Manslaughter. New York millionaire Richard Chester (Meighan) is called West to the silver mines where he made his fortune. His old friend, who is superintendent of the mine, is killed by bandits, leaving behind five motherless (and now fatherless) children. On his deathbed, the friend asks Chester to take care of them, and he promises. The young ones immediately wreak havoc in Chester's life. On the train back to New York, they practically turn the whole Pullman upside down. Then, when they arrive home, Chester informs his fiancee, Ethel McVae (Maude Wayne), that he's got a surprise for her -- the kiddies. The frivolous Ethel, who was expecting something "set in platinum or gold" is horrified to be faced with this overwhelming responsibility and promptly dumps her sweetheart. But Chester's faithful and loving secretary, Sally Lockwood (Joy), offers to help him out by taking in the youngest tot, who is ill, while the others go away to boarding school. Chester realizes he has always loved Sally anyhow, and proposes to her. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi

Before it reached the screen, this story already had a long history -originally a novel by Darragh Aldrich called Enchanted Hearts, it was adapted to the stage as A Prince There Was by the illustrious George M. Cohan. Unfortunately it was not really screen material and made a poor vehicle for Thomas Meighan, who had little to do in it. This picture was also a comedown for Mildred Harris -- after the failure of her marriage to Charles Chaplin, she was summarily bumped down to co-starring and supporting roles. Although Charles Edward Martin (Meighan) has loads of money, he has little to keep him occupied, and his pal, Jack Carruthers (Nigel Barrie), urges him to do something with his life. When Martin encounters Katherine Woods (Harris), who is forced to eke out a living as a writer after her father's suicide, he believes he has a cause. He takes a job as assistant editor on Carruthers' magazine, calling himself Mr. Prince, and moves into the boarding hous! e where Katherine lives. He buys the story that Carruthers rejected, and when he refuses to run it, buys the whole magazine and publishes it. When Katherine uncovers the whole tale, it causes a rift in their romance, but they make up soon enough. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi

The careful direction of William C. DeMille (brother of Cecil) brought fresh life to Cosmo Hamilton's all-too-typical story, His Friend and his Wife. Because Bob Meredith (Jack Holt) spends all his time working, his wife Margaret (Lois Wilson) feels the romance has ebbed away from their marriage. One night, while Meredith is at the office, family friend Julian Osborn (Conrad Nagel) -- whose own spouse (Lila Lee) is out of town -takes Margaret to a dance. They wind up at a hunting lodge and begin to get carried away, but stop before things get out of hand. The pair agree to keep their encounter a secret, but unfortunately, they've been seen and word gets back to their spouses. Finally everyone gets together, confessions are offered and all is forgiven. Incidentally, Midsummer Madness was released in the dead of winter. ~ Janiss Garza, Rovi
