Acclaimed animator and independent filmmaker Emily Hubley directed this offbeat fusion of animation and live action. Mona Peek (Lily Rabe) is slowly coming to terms with the death of her father when she learns that the house where she grew up is about to be sold. As a child, Mona buried a bone in the backyard, imaging it had magical powers, and now that a new family is about to move in, she decides to head back home to dig it up. As Mona searches for the lost talisman, she discovers she's misplaced her wallet and has to make time to find it. Meanwhile, on another plane, a pack of talking dogs are playing a game of cards that controls the path of Mona's life. The Toe Tactic also stars Kevin Corrigan, Mary Kay Place, and John Sayles, while Eli Wallach, David Cross, Don Byron, and Andrea Martin contribute their voice talents. College soccer star David Morales (Mario Lopez) loses his scholarship and is compelled to take a job as a courier for an experimental medical laboratory operated by shady Dr. Darabont (John Saxon). The money is terrific and the border crossings from California into Mexico are easy for the charming Latino. But events turn desperate when David is forced to make a hasty delivery of a small cooler that contains something needed by the evil Franco (Richard Lynch), who is being kept alive in a Mexican hospice by the renegade physician Dr. Drake (Nancy O'Dell). If David fails, his mother (Dyana Ortelli) dies. But then the FBI gets wind of the delivery. This horror film is a variation on the Frankenstein theme involving the experiments of Alex Whyte (Richard Cox), a robotics engineer for NASA. Whyte has designed a cyborg that incorporates a human brain and a mechanical body. The cyborg is fitted out with a computer program that forces it to react with extreme violence to anything (or anyone) perceived as a threat. In order to shut off this reaction, the cyborg is also fitted out with a remote control receptor that cuts its current if things get out of hand. Theory becomes reality when Whyte murders Lauren Lehman (Teri Austin), a scientist who faults him for his improper use of government funding, and then installs Lehman's brain in the cyborg. Director Joan Micklin Silver's follow-up to her acclaimed debut, Hester Street, is a more ambitious film that manages to be both an entertaining comedy and a pointed look at the corrupting power of money on an idealistic enterprise. Writer Fred Barron's characters are all associated with a weekly alternative newspaper in Boston, modeled after the Phoenix. (Silver did once work on the Village Voice, but this enterprise is several rungs below that esteemed paper.) Harry (John Heard) is an ambitious reporter romantically involved with Abbie (Lindsay Crouse), the paper's star photographer. Michael (Stephen Collins) is a writer trying to work on a novel and stay faithful to his loving wife, Laura (Gwen Welles), while Max (Jeff Goldblum), the paper's rock critic, shamelessly uses his job to try to pick up women. Lynn (Jill Eikenberry), a typist who is the paper's mother-hen figure, is also its most principled employee. When a publishing mogul (Lane Smith) buys the paper and promises changes that will compromise its aggressive political stance in favor of more "lifestyle" articles, Lynn resigns, and it's clear to the group that their carefree days are behind them. ~ Tom Wiener, Rovi
