In this cheerfully surrealistic romance, a poet named Oliverio (Darío Grandinetti) lives by his wits in Buenos Aires, winning dollars by reciting his poems to passing motorists who stop at red lights or by occasionally trading a poem for a steak from a sympathetic restaurateur. His friends include an eccentric Canadian sculptor and Death (Nacha Guevara) himself, who often encourages him to get a regular job. When he grows tired of the women he is sleeping with, his bed becomes a doorway to elsewhere, and they simply disappear. This all changes somewhat when he falls in love with a high-class (and evidently very gifted) hooker. Their lovemaking sessions literally result in the couple levitating. A woman desperate to change her life takes a wrong turn into danger and degradation in this drama. In 1924, Stephanie (Mathilda May) is travelling to Buenos Aires with her husband, who is considerably older than her and in poor health. Stephanie is not happy with her life, so when a young woman named Alba falls overboard and drowns, Stephanie assumes her identity once the ship arrives in Argentina. Stephanie realizes that this was a terrible mistake when she learns that Alba was the mail-order bride of Zico (Esai Morales), a notorious pimp and mobster who puts her to work in a brothel that he operates with his family. A terrified Stephanie kills her first customer and is soon on the run from the police; she finds that she must return to Zico's criminal family for protection, where she is placed at the mercy of Cholo (Vincent D'Onofrio), the sensuous-but-brutal "King of the Tango." From six until midnight, a tango class is led by Carla, who just lost the love of her life, Vincente. The mostly middle-aged, middle-class students attend the class for a variety of reasons, but for the most part they enjoy the sensual romanticism of the tango's dance movements and music. When Vincente's handsome nephew shows up from the countryside, passions grow more heated, and the barely suppressed jealousies and rivalries of the students become more evident.
