The Real World met The Hollywood Squares and E! True Hollywood Story on this adroitly contrived reality series. Created by Rick Telles, Cris Abrego, and Mark Cronin, The Surreal Life assembled a group of B-list celebrities (a less polite correspondent might call them "has-beens") who, over a ten-day period, all lived in the same Hollywood Hills mansion. Denied such perks as cell phones and sauna baths, the formerly famous tried their best to get along, and as expected, their best was often none too good. Among those present were ex-Mötley Crüe singer Vince Neil, former child star Emmanuel Lewis, Survivor alumnus Jerri Manthey, and the inevitable Corey Feldman. Though the participants insisted that they were not mocking their fall from professional grace, the producers had no qualms about promoting the series with the tagline: "When the stars fall from sight...this is where they crash." Ghettoblaster immediately gets down to business with a frightening montage of urban gang violence. Richard Hatch plays Travis, a survivor of the ghetto who returns home to find that his "hood" is a hotbed of criminal activity (he didn't know this when he left?) Fortunately, Travis is more than a match for the punks who terrorize the local citizenry. He himself becomes a marked man when he falls in love with Gina (Diane Moser), the object of gang leader Jesus' (Del Zamora) affections. Rita Rizzoli (Whoopi Goldberg) is a crusading narcotics cop assigned to track down the source of some killer crack cocaine in this pretentious and preachy anti-drug crime drama. Rita poses as a prostitute and is soon hot after two small-time hoods (Brad Dourif and Mike Jolly) who murder their way up the drug-dealing ladder in hopes of becoming kingpins. Cheech Marin and Catherine Blore provide interesting cameos in this feature that co-stars Ruben Blades and Sam Elliott. Contains stereotypical characters and gratuitous violence. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi
