As a sequel to the 1983 Czechoslovakian seriocomedy Snowdrops and Aces, this outing finds the adolescents from the earlier film reencountering one another on a ski trip. In lieu of the arrested adolescent behavior that this could potentially draw out, the reunions between old friends and lovers draw out alternately poignant and humorous memories of the past and an increased awareness of impending middle age as various couplings occur. ~ Nathan Southern, All Movie Guide

Visual effects specialists Greg and Colin Strause both make their feature directorial debut with this no-holds-barred monster mash that attempts to set itself apart from the 2004 Paul W.S. Anderson original by serving as a straight-up sci-fi horror scarefest. The aliens (and a predator) have landed on planet Earth, and small-town America is about to become the scene of an epic interstellar showdown. As these two breeds of cosmic killers clash in the small-town streets Gunnison, CO, the locals are sent running for their lives. From the murky sewers to the rain-soaked streets, Gunnison has become a total bloodbath. Nowhere is safe, especially from the unstoppable new hybrid known as the "predalien." Now, as the once-quiet community of Gunnison is overrun by Aliens, the only hope for humankind is a fierce hunter from the deepest reaches of space. But this predator is far from a benevolent savior of the human race, because he'll kill any man, woman, or child who gets in the way of his mission to destroy every last alien under these stormy Colorado skies. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

A major earthquake brings the City That Never Sleeps to a screeching halt in this made-for-TV suspense drama. New York City Mayor Lincoln (Charles S. Dutton) and Fire Chief Ahearn (Tom Skerritt) are contentious political rivals forced to set aside their differences and work together when a catastrophic earthquake rips into the city. Lincoln's urgency to dig the city out of the rubble becomes personal when he learns that his daughter Evie (Lisa Nicole Carson) is trapped in a buried subway car -- what's more, one of her fellow passengers is a murder suspect who has just won acquittal, but whom the mayor believes may have been guilty. Elsewhere, Dori (Sharon Lawrence) is a mother who, after accidentally injuring her child in an auto accident, becomes all the more panicked when she learns that her boy is trapped inside a damaged school building that could turn deadly in the event of an aftershock. Originally aired in November 1999, Aftershock: Earthquake in New York also features Cicely Tyson, Erika Eleniak, Jennifer Garner, and Fred Weller. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

"What if they're right?" screamed the ad copy for the TV movie Y2K, referring to the millions of otherwise rational, level-headed people who lived in mortal terror that virtually every computer in the world would malfunction on December 31, 1999, because of an imbedded inability to "read" the year 2000. As it turned out, of course, "they" were wrong, and no worldwide technical meltdown occurred: but the producers of this film, which originally aired November 21, 1999, on NBC, were clearly not above exploiting everyone's panic over things to come to make a few bucks. In traditional disaster-flick fashion, the film offers a multitude of subplots with several different sets of main characters, all of whose lives will be profoundly altered by the cataclysmic events of Y2K. Likewise adhering to tradition is the notion that only one man is capable of saving the world from plunging into a computerized abyss. That man is MIT-trained "systems failure" expert Nick Cromwell (Ken Olin), who on the eve of the new millennium races against time to prevent a nuclear disaster in New York City -- one that threatens to dwarf a similar reactor meltdown that occurred a scant few hours earlier in Sweden. To juice up the suspense, the script contrives to place Cromwell's wife Kelly (Jane McGregor) and daughter Alix (Kate Vernon) in jeopardy while dad is off being a hero. The film's level of credibility reaches a crest when Jay Leno makes a cameo appearance as himself. Seen from the vantage point of the post-9/11, post-Hurricane Katrina era, Y2K seems as quaint and naïve as a 1908 Biograph one-reeler -- perhaps even more so. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Made for and originally broadcast on the USA Cable Network, this soap-operatic tale of deceit, kidnapping and motherly love is set in a small town and centers on Ellie (Mary Page Keller) the wife of the burg's sheriff and her beloved adopted son Charlie (Michael Suchanek). Ellie's marriage to Jack (Jack Wagner) is quite troubled, due in part to his rather shabby treatment of Charlie. Ray (Ian Tracey), his girlfriend Sarah (Tracey Gold) and the rest of his gang make money robbing liquor stores until Sarah comes up with an even better plan: why not kidnap the sheriff's son and ask for $100,000 ransom. That is exactly what they do. Ellie is frantic and wants to call in the FBI, but Jack insists on handling the investigation himself. Determined to have Charlie back, no matter the cost, Ellie convinces her father, owner of the town bank, to put up the ransom. Unfortunately, she does not realize that Sarah, to whom Charlie bears more than a passing resemblance, has other plans. As those plans are enacted, Ellie finds herself learning some surprising and painfully dark secrets, leaving her to wonder just who the good and bad guys really are. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide

Zdenek (Vladimir Javoprsky) is a gangly, rural and homely hayseed who studies music. When he takes a summer job as a mailman, he quickly becomes the object of affection for several willing females. One tells Zdenek she is pregnant and later runs off after abandoning the baby on his doorstep. He ends up caring for the infant despite learning that he is not the father. Although the feature is a comedy, it is hard to find humor in an abandoned baby, the plight of an emotionally troubled unmarried mother, and a suicide. ~ Dan Pavlides, All Movie Guide

- Vladimir Javorsky, Yvette Kornova, (more)
In this film about young boys who get into all kinds of trouble, director Karel Smyczek makes an interesting contrast to his earlier film Goslings, about a group of young girls. Petr (Michal Suchanek) and Pavel (Dan Sedivak) decide to skip school one day and head out on a binge of childish wrong-doing that lands one in serious trouble and the other bailed out by parents who are not ultimately too concerned about him. The boys steal organ pipes, try selling some lurid pictures they find at home, and get rip-roaring drunk at a party -- a lot to pack into one day of truancy. The reactions of their parents and the society around them are even more telling than the misguided exploits of the boys themselves. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, All Movie Guide
