As her retirement unfurls, ex-Mossad agent Rachel (Gila Almagor) unexpectedly comes face to face with a long-buried demon from her past in Israeli director Assaf Bernstein's haunting psychological thriller The Debt. Though Rachel lived out a central intelligence career packed with one earth-shaking climax after another, the highlight undoubtedly arrived in the mid-'60s, when she and colleagues Ehud and Zvi joined forces to successfully track down and exterminate a long-elusive Nazi war criminal ominously nicknamed "The Surgeon of Birkenau." Now, the mid-'90s have arrived, and Rachel attends the party to celebrate her recently published memoirs. Zvi suddenly crops up for the first time in years, with a haunting and compelling account of an elderly gentleman in a Kiev, Ukraine nursing home, who insists that he is actually the "real" surgeon. Director Bernstein co-mingles 1960s spy film visual style with the tale of a woman in her golden years summoned to perform one last mission, checking off an assignment left unrealized. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

A man has to make the body of his late girlfriend disappear, which he finds is not especially easy in this black comedy from Germany. Paul (Boris Aljinovic) is a straight-laced architect who lands a lucrative design contract and treats himself to a night on the town with his friend Max (Jurgen Tarrach), a pathologist, and his business partner Rike (Claudia Michelsen). During the course of the evening, however, someone doses Paul's drink with a heavy-duty hallucinogen, and the severely stoned Paul arrives at his flat entirely unaware that his girlfriend is dead on the floor of his living room, her neck having been broken during a sexual escapade gone wrong with her boss. The next morning, Paul, who has no memories of the previous night's activities, discovers the dead woman in his apartment; realizing he has no way to explain his innocence to the police, he calls on Max, who warily agrees to help him get rid of the body. But when a neighbor sees Paul and Max trying to drag a corpse out of the flat, they decide that some subterfuge is in order; thus, they try to reduce the bulk of the body in a variety of ways, using an array of household appliances (including a blender and a food processor), with a suitably disgusted Rike eventually called in to help. 3 Chinesen Mit Dem Kontrabass was the debut feature from writer and director Klaus Kraemer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A man taking part in a scientific study finds the fine line between play-acting and reality has been blurred beyond recognition in this taut drama. Tarek Fahd (Moritz Bleibtreu) is a journalist who is temporarily making ends meet by driving a taxi when he sees an advertisement offering 4,000 marks to people willing to submit to a psychological experiment. Intrigued, Tarek offers to take part in the study and persuades one of his former editors to help him work up a story about his experiences. Recording the events using a special high-tech video camera hidden in his glasses, Tarek arrives for the two-week experiment to discover half of the volunteers will pose as prison guards and the other half will be their prisoners. Before long the behavior of the subjects suggests more than just make-believe; "inmate" Tarek, in particular, is unwilling to take abuse from the "guards" and makes no secret of his contempt, while Berus (Justus VonDohnanyi) begins playing a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with Tarek. Tarek, meanwhile, begins escaping reality by fantasizing about Dora (Maren Eggert), a woman with whom he had a brief fling before taking part in the experiment. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A buddy movie in the tradition of Wayne's World and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Doppelpack introduces viewers to erstwhile pals Hoffi (Markus Kneufken) and Lehmi (Eckhard Preuss, who also co-wrote the movie) waking up in Dortmund Zoo after an all-night booze orgy. Following a hearty breakfast, the extroverted Hoffi and laconic Lehmi find a crate of beer and take to roaming the streets in a vague mission to find a birthday present for Hoffi's sister. Along the way, Lehmi becomes enamored of a barmaid (Margret Voelker), and Hoffi falls for a picture of a comely girl (Jeanne Tremsal) he finds in a photo booth. Later in the day they find the latter working in a retail store and Hoffi begins pursuing her; the three subsequently go to a club, where Lehmi becomes reacquainted with his barmaid. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

An artist finds that leaving the creative life behind is more complicated than he expected in this comedy. Edward Schreiner (Tonio Arango) is a painter whose unusual ideas about art have prevented him from winning an audience for his work. Edward insists on destroying all of his work, convinced that this is the only true way to complete a canvas. While Edward's work has somehow won him a wealthy patron (Maximilian Schell), he becomes disillusioned with the world of art, and after a stint managing a gallery, he gives up and takes a job as a banker. However, just because Edward is finished with art doesn't mean that art is finished with Edward. Fisimatenten is the debut feature from Jochen Kuhn, who has a background in both fine art and animation. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Based on true story, Requiem Fuer Eine Romantische Frau was inspired by the relationship between poet Clemens Bretano (Sylvester Groth) and Auguste Bussmann (Janina Sachau), a 17-year-old girl whose father was a successful banker. Clemens becomes infatuated with Auguste, and she soon falls for him as well. While Auguste eagerly embraces a bohemian lifestyle, Clemens is unhappy with her lack of refinement and even tires of her abundant sexual appetite. Auguste's eccentricity soon descends into instability, and she attempts suicide several times as she slips deeper into madness. A historical drama that explores manners and mores as much as actions, Requiem Fuer Eine Romantische Frau was the second feature for director Dagmar Knoepfel, whose previous film as 1994's Brigitta. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This powerful Scandinavian biopic chronicles the fall of one of Norway's most respected authors, Knut Hamsun (played by Max von Sydow in one of his most acclaimed performances) who up until WWII was considered one of the greatest Norwegians of the 20th century. At the dawn of the war, the Nobel Prize winning author shocked his countrymen by publicly siding with the Nazis. His wife Marie took it a step further and went to Germany to give lectures. Following the war, both were convicted and branded as traitors. Hamsun attempts to answer the questions surrounding the author and his wife's treachery. By the time the war erupted, Hamsun was an elderly curmudgeon who could barely hear. A profoundly lonely man with hatred of British Imperialism, he was an easy target for Nazi propaganda. His wife Marie, who in Norway is still more vilified than her husband, also had her reasons to support the German party, but while though-provoking, they don't invite much sympathy. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Using two parallel stories, this drama explores the reconstruction of Germany after the Second World war. To what extend did the lessons of the war sink in? In the story, an idealistic cameraman and his more worldly friend, a movie director, have hidden their old equipment until it is safe to use it again. Finally, the war is over, and movies are being made again. The director is willing to make popular entertainments, but his friend the cameraman has a yen to make something more socially relevant, commenting on the evils of the Hitler regime. Curiously, though they come to a parting of the ways, it comes over a woman they have both falling in love with, rather than these weighty issues. In the parallel story, a former soldier in the Reich's armies has been discharged and has returned to his home town and his old job as projectionist at the local movie theater. He and the others experience some difficulty with the occupying forces, especially with the dark-skinned Moroccans, but as soon as they can, they settle down into their old lives - including their prewar prejudices. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Director Wolf-Eckart Bühler follows up his earlier, lengthy interview with Sterling Hayden in this three-part chronicle of the traumas in the actor's life. Based on Hayden's autobiography Wanderer, Bühler has three different actors deliver segments of the book in a detached way -- focusing on the problems created by sudden national media attention, the nature of intense pressure from high-ranking authorities, and the gradual formation of a betrayal of both ethics and friends. (Hayden was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951 and named Hollywood colleagues as fellow leftists -- much to his lifelong regret). The literary readings, even when interesting in their own right, do not lend themselves to dramatic cinema, limiting this film to viewers with an avid interest in politics. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi

This two-hour documentary and fiction film was a cooperative writing effort by five different German writers and/or directors, one of the most noted being the 1972 Nobel prize winner Heinrich Böll. Böll was specifically responsible for three fictive episodes at the end of the film that promote an anti-nuclear, pro-peace message ("Space Talk," "Atom Bunker," and "Kill Your Sister"). Documentary footage of Chancellors Helmut Kohl and Helmut Schmidt in action, along with various European and American leaders highlight the urgent issues of the day. At a time when this film partly addresses these issues and partly hedges its bets, religious leaders in Europe were coming out with a very strong anti-war statement. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
