The title of this Indonesian film translates loosely to Mementos. The film is set in the 1930s, when Indonesia was still called the Dutch East Indies. Incensed by the political murder of a close friend, musician Alex Komang plots the assassination of a Dutch commissioner. But when he falls in love with actress Jenny Rachman, the sister of his murdered friend, Komang falters in his resolve to seek vengeance. The intensity of the storyline, and its ironic denouement, must have struck a responsive chord with its audience: Doea Tanda Mata was an enormous moneymaker in its home country, as well as the winner of several Citra Awards (the Indonesian equivalent of the Oscar). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In this story, an Indonesian rebellion against the Dutch colonial authorities in 1828 is chronicled. Two main characters' activities are followed. Both are of mixed Indonesian/Dutch heritage, and are officers in the Dutch army forces in Indonesia. One favors giving more autonomy to the Indonesian people, and the other wholly identifies with the colonial occupiers of his country. When an uprising begins in a village, it does not spread very far before it is brutally suppressed ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi
