An aging artist and a young prostitute fight for survival as their realities begin to shift. Homero is a successful artist from Querétaro. He's in his late forties when he discovers that he has inherited a rare form of blindness that will gradually steal the primary colors from his vision before robbing him of sight altogether. Accepting of his fate yet unwilling to let go of the art that has given his life so much meaning, Homero attempts to stay connected to the world by adopting a stray dog, talking with prostitutes, and memorizing texts to recite to his blind father. In the process of committing those texts to memory, Homero falls deeply in love with his reading instructor, a pretty nun named Irma. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Mei is abandoned by her mother -- a famous prostitute -- at the China Galleon, a former railway station in the Mexican desert that has been converted into a whorehouse. Mei's mother has left for the United States, and she's left her daughter to work as a servant in exchange for food and lodging for her and her elderly grandparents. In order to earn some extra cash, Mei begins raising moths and sewing their elaborate wing patterns as embroidered works. She gets along well with the prostitutes, and before long, she's fallen in love with a handsome young store clerk. Later, when Homero is almost completely blind, a sympathetic taxi driver offers to take him to the China Galleon. There, kindred spirits Homero and Mei will meet either by fate, or by chance. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

During a family dinner in honor of his birthday, patriarch Rodrigo Carnicero (Xavier Masse) drops dead of a heart attack. Among the witnesses are his devoted daughter Pureza (Pilar Ixquic Mata) and his beloved grandchildren Rocco (Osvaldo Benavides) and Rodrigo (Rodrigo Cachero). Rocco and Rodrigo are cousins, though completely different; while Rocco is laid-back and hippie-ish, Rodrigo is dour and conservative. One thing Rocco and Rodrigo have in common, however, is their loyalty to their departed grandfather, with whom they enjoyed a closer relationship than with either of their self-absorbed fathers. After Don Rodrigo's death, Rocco and Rodrigo take off in the vintage car left to Rodrigo by his grandfather to dispose of the don's ashes in the manner requested in his will. When they arrive at the beach where their grandfather is to be scattered, Rocco and Rodrigo lodge at a hotel run by Perla (Gina Morett) and her daughter Maria (Ana de la Reguera). Chaos soon results when the urn is lost, Rocco hooks up with Maria for his initiation into sex, and the cousins discover that Perla once enjoyed intimate relations with their beloved grandfather. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, Rovi

This Mexican drama is a faithful adaptation of Nobel-laureate Naguib Mahfouz's novel, only it is set in contemporary Mexico City instead of 1940s Cairo. The film is comprised of three overlapping "chapters" that come together in the fourth chapter. Each segment, centering on a different character, takes place at the same time in a rundown neighborhood. The disparate characters all have one thing in common--none of them get what they want. Chava, the son of tavern-owner Rutilio, wants to go to the US. The fiercely independent and beautiful Alma is thinking about marrying a wealthy shop keeper. The impoverished young barber Abel is in love with Alma. Then there is the spinster Susanita who owns an apartment house and spends her spare time involved in unhealthy love affairs. After killing his father's mistress in a fit of moral outrage, Chava ends up on the lam for two years. Abel takes off for a long time and Alma ends up becoming a drug-addicted prostitute whom Abel cannot save. Susanita gets married to young Guicho and learns that he is robbing her. She is just about to toss him out when she discovers that her really loves her after all. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
A lonely, aging postal worker finds himself the victim of a cruel practical joke in this pessimistic Mexican drama. The trouble begins when crotchety postman Andre begins complaining about his young neighbor Marianna's propensity for playing loud music every time she entertains a lover. To get back at him, Marianna begins sending him anonymous love letters. The old man is intrigued by the mysterious letters and hires a cheap detective to find their author. The detective is convinced the perpetrator is Teresita, a veteran hooker who joins in on the scheme to earn a little extra cash. Andre's friend and colleague tries to warn Andre that it is all a game, but his friend is in love and will not listen. Meanwhile, Marianna attempts to woo Luis Felipe, a hard, unfeeling tabloid journalist who has her take grisly pictures of murder victims for him. Both Marianna and Andre are destined to meet an unpleasant fate at the story's end. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Those who enjoy religious allegories like Pilgrim's Progress will have an easier time with this carefully constructed drama than those looking simply for a straightforward story. In the movie, circus-born Alma is a performer at the Fantasia Circus. Her mother has left her, and she is having an affair with her father, who is ill. When he dies, she is pregnant by him, which everyone in the troupe can easily figure out. Shunned by her peers, she takes to the streets as a fire-eater and then joins up with a wandering marionette troupe, led by Refugio, a very strict woman who learns of Alma's situation and requires that she follow very careful guidelines in order to have any standing in her eyes. She works with the leader's puppeteer son Sacramento to put on complex performances of Old Testament stories. As in similar allegories, characters in the movie embody the essence of their names; Alma = soul, Refugio = refuge, Sacramento = sacrament. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

El Angel Enmascarado was found dead in his mansion, and reporter Olmo Robles has been given the task of finding out what happened to the famous (and wealthy) wrestler -- including the wrestler's true identity, which has remained hidden from the beginning. This takes him into the wrestler's past and the vast, gritty world of wannabe wrestlers and hangers-on, seedy nightclubs, and underworld types. Why did El Angel give up his identity as a young man? A lot of people don't want Olmo to find out, and he receives several serious attacks intended as warnings. This film-noir detective movie/comedy is also an affectionate spoof of Mexican wrestling films of the 1950s and '60s, and will probably be best appreciated by those familiar with the genre. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

This film came into existence because the screenwriter and director won a 1983 screenplay-writing competition. In the story, a family of eight "Chilangos" are vacationing in the Mexican countryside. "Chilangos" are long-time residents of Mexico City, and they are famed for having loud, quarrelsome, demanding and generally obnoxious behavior when outside their city, similar to the reputation of New Yorkers off their home turf. Quite soon during their vacation, a group of revolutionaries have stolen the family's money, and they are thrown on the mercy of police, politicians, and celebrities looking for opportunities to gain some publicity. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

Suspenseful without emphasizing blood and gore, this crime drama stars Maribel Guardia as Eugenia (The Scorpion), a tough, single-minded detective who is determined to track down a deranged killer that is terrorizing the demimonde of Mexico City. The schizoid murderer is Don Eliseo Mendieta (Carlos Ancira), an antique dealer by day, and a brutal killer at night. His religion-inspired madness drives him to kill each of the people in a porn film in exactly the same way, including his wife. "The Scorpion" travels through the shady, crime-ridden neighborhoods of the city looking for leads that will help her capture the murderer. ~ Eleanor Mannikka, Rovi
