A veteran call girl and a neurotic psychotherapist discover that they have far more in common than they imagined in this comedy drama from filmmaker Jeanne Labrune. Alice (Isabelle Huppert) is a high-end prostitute who has been in the game for many years but thinks it might be time for her to find a new career. Meanwhile, Xavier (Bouli Lanners) is an analyst who is having a hard time sorting out his own relationship issues, especially since his wife (Valerie Dreville) is demanding a divorce. Xavier isn't happy about the sad state of his sex life, and a friend suggests he turn to a professional and puts him in touch with Alice. After Alice and Xavier bond over their shared interest in antiques, they strike a deal -- he'll give her therapy sessions, as she needs to shore up her confidence and sort out her emotional issues while she gives up prostitution, and in turn she'll give him the sex that he's not getting from his unhappy wife. However, while Alice is cool and matter-of-fact about her trade, Xavier isn't quite as casual about sex, and he's curious about her ability to assume different personalities at the whims of her customers. Actress-cum-director Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi's sophomore feature, the comedy-drama Les Actrices (Le reve de la nuit d'avant), follows the trials and travails of Marcelline (Tedeschi), a tense and jittery stage thesp whose personal and professional life threaten to fall into pieces simultaneously. On a personal level, Marcelline hits the midpoint of her life, hears her biological clock ticking, and longs desperately for a child. At work, Marcelline's inability to find the core of her character, Natalia Petrovna, in a production of Turgenev's A Month in the Country only causes her emotional tension to double. In time, she regresses into such a basket case that she can barely respond to the stage director's query about whether she is right or left-handed. Marcelline's natty and overanxious mother (Marisa Borini, Tedeschi's mother in real life) weighs heavily on her as well, pressuring her constantly about the need to find an appropriate suitor before time runs out; instead, Marcelline finds herself drawn helplessly to Eric (Louis Garrel) a sexy young actor in the production - who, without her knowledge, nurtures reciprocal affections. This parallels the events that befall Petrovna in Turgenev's play, and indeed, at one point the spirit of Petrovna (Valeria Golino) appears to Marcelline for much-needed counsel. A bodyguard hired to look after a lawyer ends up protecting the man from himself in this breezy comedy from France. Bertrand Beauvois (Fabrice Luchini) is a successful fiftysomething attorney who's hired to represent Edith Lasalle (Stéphane Audran), who has been charged with killing a man with ties to the Russian mafia. Edith's adult son, Louis (Gilles Cohen), has been warned that Russian strong-arm men may try to silence his mother and her legal team, so he hires a private security team to protect them and Bertrand finds he's shadowed at all times by stone-faced Christophe Abadi (Roschdy Zem). Bertrand doesn't see the need for Christophe's presence, but when the lawyer has trouble brushing off a former girlfriend he'd rather not see, the bodyguard turns out to be a valuable ally. Bertrand and Christophe strike up a friendship, as the former is increasingly impressed with the latter's street smarts and good judgment, but when Audrey Varela (Louise Bourgoin), a gorgeous woman nearly half Bertrand's age, begins throwing herself at him, Christophe has a hard time convincing his client that something is clearly not right.
